Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Codified is a Dunkel Lager that is distinctly malt-forward, yet clean and easy-drinking. Expect notes of caramel, chocolate and freshly baked bread, but a dry finish for continued enjoyment.

First brewed by the Benedictine monks in the mid 12th century, Dunkel beers were further enhanced by the 1516 Reinheitsgebot which decreed that beer could be made only from barley, hops, and water. The style has continued its evolution over the last 200 years. Our modern version is highly sessionable and delivers a deep, full Munich malt character with only slight bitterness, making it the perfect cold weather companion. When the nights are chilly or you want a full-bodied beer for the game, you can't miss with a Slam Dunkel!

Coming in at 5.8% ABV and 22 IBUs Fearless Youth is true to its style. Featuring a complex bready malt with just a hint of Hallertauer hops. Fearless youth features a clean easy refreshing finish. This beer won a Bronze at the 2013 GABF and a Silver at the 2015 GABF.

Dawn of the Dunkel is a collaboration with Weyermann malt, brewed exclusively with Weyermann malted barley. This is a reconstruction of the first Bavarian dark lager, adapted from a recipe circa 1550. Technology at the time dictated floor-malting and inhomogeneous direct-fired kilning, which we’re duplicating by using a combination of malts ranging from pale to roasted, and a good portion of smoked malt. Dawn of the Dunkel has lots of chocolate roasted notes, underlying smoke, and a sweet dry finish.

Wolfgeist Dunkel Lager is a richly malted beer with deep notes of chocolate that drinks clean and finishes dry. Unlike a porter or stout, this dark beer has virtually no yeasty esters and the body is surprisingly uplifting and effervescent. An homage to the Feldgeist of German folklore, Wolfgeist is rooted in centuries of harvest festivals and traditional brewing methods. When the cold winds rise and heavy November rains lash against your windows, this is the beer to pour as you set spark to tinder and warm yourself by the hearth.

Originally brewed in Munich, this classic dark lager has become quite popular throughout Germany. We use a large amount of Munich malts in this lager to provide a bread-like taste with a hint of caramel, which is common of this particular style of beer. We also use one of Germany's finest noble hops from the Hallertauer region to make this beer as authentic as possible. The rich and sweet aromas balanced with its deep brown color will be sure to give your senses an enjoyable overall impression.

The perfect seasonal for Fall weather. This is a double version of our Moondoor Dunkel brewed with lots of chocolate malt for a higher ABV (7.5%) and lagered on Madagascar vanilla beans for a smooth, tasty finish.

Production in Japan was stopped in September 2015. If you have a dark Asahi beer after that, it is Dry Black.
