As far as we know, there is no such word in German as Schplink. But if there's a bunch of consonants with one vowel and an umlaut, then any word can look Germanic. With electric yellow color, dot matrix font, and futuristic models from the 1980s, this box of Gruner will grab your attention and invite you into its digital world. However, the 11th generation winemaker Norbert Bauer is anything but a 21st-century phenomenon. The winery was founded back in 1721 in Pulkautal, Lower Austria, and is still going strong with traditional yet forward-thinking wines. In Schplink, Norbert & Gisela Bauer offer a Gruner that is so modern, refreshing, and tantalizing. The cool climate, hand-picked fruit (from vines that are up to 35 years-old) is fermented and aged in steel. Lightly fined and filtered before transferred to 3L boxes. Flavor Profile: Medium-bodied, dry. Bright lemon acidity, minerals, and aromatics that are perfect for hot summer days. Keep it in the fridge and pour yourself a glass or carafe to have with fish, mayo-based salads, cheeses, schnitzels, and sausages.

"If you have never tasted Grüner Veltliner before, this is a fabulous introduction. It has beautiful white peach aromas and flavours, with a seasoning of white pepper or even daikon, which is so characteristic of the variety. Great value! Weingut Pfaffl was awarded Wine Enthusiast European Winery of the Year in 2016"

Lois-Gruner-Veltliner
Lois (rhyming with “choice”) is named after the village of Langenlois and was one of the first high-quality examples of Grüner Veltliner to be exported to international markets in 1999. Its intent is an easy-to-enjoy, fresh-tasting style of Grüner Veltliner produced from a combination of estate grown fruit and contracted growers in Lower Austria. Grüner Veltliner’s bright acidity and savory character make it and an ideal partner to mildly spiced Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese dishes. Fish and shellfish are accented by Grüner Veltliner’s citrus and mineral profile while its acidity cuts the richness of pork or ham. It can also work well with foods that are difficult to pair such as bitter greens and asparagus.

Red with purplish shades in the glass. Notes of fresh red fruits such as raspberry and cherry accompany a fresh floral profile of violet. Spicy notes of pepper show the wild aspect of the variety. Subtle notes of vanilla and coconut. This wine is round and soft with a fruity mouth-feel and good acidity.

This Grüner Veltliner is fresh and vibrant with flavors of green pear, lime, grapefruit and white pepper with a clean, mineral finish that makes it the perfect alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless with no oak influence. Our dear friends Nico and Laura Espenschied craft their wines “with heart and hand” in the village of Flonheim, Germany.

Tasting notes: youthful, fruity and fresh. A perfect summer-wine on the terrace. Food recommendation: Fish, seafood and lobster, poultry and Saumeisen - traditional Austrian sausages filled with mashed smoked pork - go nicely with this wine. But, as always, let your own taste take the final decision.

The fact that this estate is crafting some of the very best dry wines in Germany is no fluke, rather a result of nearly obsessive winemaker Stefan Attman’s commitment to both dedicated cultivation of Deidesheim and Forst’s best sites and meticulous work in the cellar. Under the same ownership and winemaking team, the Dr. Deinhard label is designated for fruity styles vinified in stainless steel while the Von Winning label is reserved for the Grosses Gewächs sites vinified dry and in wood. Von Winning maintains some of the oldest parcels in Grosses Gewächs vineyards smattered across Forst, Deidesheim, and Ruppertsberg. Attman’s every decision is informed by great enthusiasm and experiences at estates in the Cote d’Or and abroad. For example, Attman’s newer vines are planted at a very high vine density- 9500 vines per hectare, as opposed to the more typical less than 5000. This creates competition amongst the vines, forcing the roots to grow deep, naturally reducing yields. Attman has adopted the single cane trellising system, prevalent in Burgundy, and Grosses Gewächs wines ferment in 500mL French barrels. Von Winning practices organic and sustainable viticulture. Attmann describes his winemaking as “not doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.” The estate’s premium wines are treated with a minimalist approach and with the highest respect in the cellar. Gentle clarification, a natural and spontaneous fermentation and the abandonment of fining agents create wines with a distinctive indigenous and very elegant style. Pumping the juice or wine is never necessary in the gravity flow winery, allowing for minimal, and gentle vinification.

The upper Loire Valley is known for two iconic wine growing sub-regions – Pouilly Fume, and Sancerre. Nearly all wine cultivated in these areas are from the Sauvignon Blanc variety. Crisp, appropriately acidic, and aromatic, these wines are an amazing experience on both the nose and palate. They also tend to be somewhat more expensive compared to Sauvignon Blancs from other regions - but not necessarily without good reason.

The Wagram, a rocky outcrop which stretches across the north bank of the Danube all the way from Krems to east of Vienna, is the distinct location where our grapevines grow. The area looks back on a one thousand-year old history of winegrowing. Already the Romans had recognized the favorable environment for growing wine grapes. Grüner Veltliner feels particularly well on the gentle loess terraces oriented almost exclusively towards the south. It is there where Grüner Veltliner develops its spicy-peppery flavors which are so highly appreciated by Veltliner lovers. But also Riesling and the wines of the Pinot family as well as Austria's most important red wine varieties mature to great wines on the Wagram.

Vöcal Vineyards Alfaro Gruner Veltliner

Vöcal-Vineyards-Alfaro-Gruner-Veltliner
Vöcal wines are the brainchild of sommelier/winemaker Ted Glennon, whose mission is to let his vineyard sources do most of the talking. This expression of Grüner Veltliner from the Santa Cruz Mountains is spot-on—right up there with its Austrian contemporaries. One of the things we can’t help but do when evaluating California wines is compare them to their “Old World” exemplars. It’s impossible not to, but it’s a little unfair to the California wines: They’re treated like “cover versions” rather than original compositions. Nevertheless, as we all know, sometimes the covers live up to—or even eclipse—the originals (consider Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” versus Otis Redding’s, or the Napa Cabs of the 1976 “Paris Tasting” versus Bordeaux). Our hats come off today for our friend Ted Glennon of Vöcal Vineyards, whose 2017 “Alfaro Vineyard” Grüner Veltliner does full justice to the Austrian originals while also singing in its own clear, Californian voice. It’s a delicious, invigorating Grüner: spot-on in terms of varietal character and structured like a Smaragd-level wine from the Wachau. Tack on a little California Coast ‘sea-spray’ character and you’ve got a killer cool-climate white to enjoy through the summer and beyond. Along with his collaborator Ian Brand (San Francisco Chronicle “Winemaker of the Year” last year), Ted is a champion of vineyards influenced by the cold, deep Monterey Bay—and he nailed it with this one. The Alfaro Vineyard is at the southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, about four miles from Monterey Bay. Sitting at 500+-feet elevation and facing southwest, right in the path of the wind and fog whipped up by the Bay, its situation and rocky, sandy soils bear a strong resemblance to the vineyards of Grüner Veltliner’s Austrian homeland. Richard Alfaro was inspired to plant Grüner after falling in love with the variety at a dinner featuring the wines of Wachau (Austria) legend Nikolaihof; at present, his is the only vineyard planted to the grape in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Glennon has had access to Alfaro-grown Grüner since 2014, and while 2017 proved to be a hot, difficult year in parts of the region, the Alfaro Vineyard fared quite well in the end. As Ted explained in his tasting notes, a record heatwave “sadly roasted our beloved Lilo Pinot Noir Vineyard, and caused havoc for many beloved sites. However, our patch of Alfaro's Grüner Veltliner soaked up the heat and developed some incredible flavors and compelling structure.” Vöcal’s Alfaro Vineyard Grüner was fermented and aged in a mixture of used French oak barrels (30%) and stainless steel drums, and it displays a pitch-perfect balance of richness and raciness. In the glass, it’s a bright yellow-gold with flecks of green and silver at the rim, with aromas of tart green apple, Asian pear, citrus, wild herbs, white pepper, and wet stones. Medium-plus in body, with a sunny core of ripe fruit, it finishes with mouthwatering freshness and a salty kick after leaving a big impression on the mid-palate. It is ready to drink now and over the next few years: Simply pull the cork and let it rip at 45-50 degrees; it will make a great partner to a lemony seafood preparation, an herby salad, or really anything fresh and bright you think up. It’s a really evocative, well-made wine—respect!

A hazy white from an organic winery helmed by a female vigneron. Gruner Veltliner is the primary white grape of Austria, and in the cool climate of Carnuntum it retains a lovely green note, like ripe kiwi and honeydew, with touches of yeastiness and salt. Fresh 2019 release, incredibly invigorating. Native yeast, no filtering or fining.

Heidler Gruner Veltliner 'Loess' is a stunning Gruner. One of the best! Ludwig Hiedler is crafting some of the most interesting, texturally compelling wines of the Kamptal region. The estate is a pioneer in ecological winegrowing and only sustainable vineyard practices and organic farming are implemented. The wine is precise and clean with a generous richness that is detailed and refined. Subtly gorgeous floral and fruit aromas and hints of typical yet attractive Gruner fennel and grass with more depth than usual because of the fantastic vintage. Lovely to pair with vegetables, salads and seafood and has an easy "gulpable" 11.5% alcohol. A lovely wine that over delivers!
