One of the finest apple brandies around. It is made from 40 different varieties of apples and is twice-distilled, then aged 4 years, creating a smooth and rich apple flavor. Great sipped on its own, and also as an accompaniment to pork and sausage dishes, or even cheese fondue.

Its colour is clear; it is fine and floral, fresh and light with first notes of burned apple. In the second nose, persistent notes reminding of fresh green apple. The palate is mineral, slightly peppery and minty. The finish on the palate is reminiscent of the salted butter caramel.

A fantastic entry level Calvados from the folk at Chateau de Breuil. They make their own cider and after distillation age their VSOP for a minimum of four years for close control over the flavour of the calvados at all stages of production. A soft but flavoursome spirit.

Camut's 6 year old is simply astounding. Camut has always been the benchmark for Calvados, and this new batch of 6 year might now even outshine the immortal 12 year old. Crisp, juicy cider notes mix with a modest amount of barrel aging, all working in perfect unison. The acidity of the apples carries through into the spirit, despite being distilled twice. Apple brandies should have an even balance of fruit and richness, so I tend to prefer the 8- to 12-year-olds more than the older offerings.

Aged 2-3 years. Crisp apple aroma, but there’s plenty of heat here as well. The body offers tart apple (think Granny Smith), lemon peel, some floral elements, and a touch of wood on the back end. Rustic, almost pastoral. This is clearly young stuff, particularly on the slightly rubbery and lightly vegetal finish, but it still drinks well. I’d consider it primarily for cocktailing, sipping neat in a pinch. 80 proof. B / $55

This Calvados has been aged over 15 years in small oak casks and shows the complexity that makes Christian Drouin "Coeur de Lion" the star of Calvados. The colour is flamboyant amber flame like; the nose is complex and balanced. On the palate, it is smooth, dominated by wood and spices, with great length.

THE CALVADOS: The Domaine Dupont Calvados all have the "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Pays d'Auge". Made using double distillation in a Charente style alembic, they all receive aging in oak barrels, for periods varying between 2 to 40 years. They are only bottled when about to be sold.

This French Calvados apple brandy, Calvados Roger Groult Eight Year, was crafted from cider apples that were handpicked at the Pays d´Aug estate in Lower Normandy, France. This Calvados received a double distillation process over wood bringing fires. Subsequently, only the core of this distilled liquor was passed along to French oak barrels where this liquor was aged for eight years. Calvados Roger Groult 8 Years has a beautiful amber golden colored body. In the nose there are expressive apple, cinnamon, and vanilla aromatics alongside a elegant wooden background of spices, especially toasted vanillas. This Calvados has a well-rounded palate that is beautiful and very persistent. This is an elegant and silky French Calvados.

The apples for Chauffe Couer Calvados are harvested, pressed and fermented into cider by varieties and then aged for 10 months or more. Also, according to the old family recipe, the Chauffe Coeur Calvados is a blend made of single distilled and double distilled Calvados and therefore it has to lose the Pays d’Auge appellation for which all the Calvados have to be double distilled by law.

For nearly 200 years, Calvados Boulard has been produced in the town of Coquainvilliers in the Pays d’Auge region of France. Although calvados may be produced anywhere in Normandy, only the finest expressions come from the small region of Pays d’Auge. Working with a co-op of growers on 150 family-owned acres, Calvados Boulard harvests over 120 varieties of apple from the nearly 800 grown. Calvados Boulard is distilled just two times in copper pot stills before being laid to rest in new Limousin oak barrels. This combination of apples creates a product with a very fruit forward flavor profile, complexity and balance. Calvados is an appellation in France that specializes in the distillation of cider. After being distilled, this Calvados Pays d’Auge Le Père Jules is matured in oak barrels. The barrels are carefully chosen in different sizes as they will allow the Calvados’ personality to slowly develop. Blending is the last stage before bottling. This Calvados is a blend of multiple vintages. It is aged for 3 years in oak. Still very young, this Calvados is characterized by great aromas of green apple. Fruity, slightly oaky, with aromas of vanilla and spices, it offers exemplary power and finesse. The finish is long, lively and persistent. In a cocktail, as liqueur in a tulip glass after a fine meal or in the middle of the meal (« Trou Normand »), with strong cheeses like Livarot, with coffee (served inside the cup once the coffee has been drunk as in the inns of Normandy) or a cigar.

The Bouquet des Coeur de Lion XO is complex and fine, with notes of ripe apples, almonds, apple pie, vanilla and spices. The palate is also rich, initially fruity, then increasingly smooth and with a long finish. Served at room temperature in a nosing glass, it goes particularly well with Normandy Livarot cheese, apple pie and as a digestif.

This Calvados VS follows the strict Calvados AOC Pays d’Auge guidelines that require double-distillations in a traditional copper pot still called an “alembic á repassé.” The fermented cidre that is used for making Calvados (called calvados cidre) is fermented for 12 months in hundred-year-old oak barrels before being distilled. The Calvados is then put in oak barrels once again and aged for two to three years.

Pommeau de Normandie is a blend of apple must and Calvados from Pays d’Auge that has been aged for a year in oak barrels. It is then aged in barrels for a minimum of 5 years, where it develops a harmonious taste. Apple must is made with the greatest care from selected high stalk orchards. From October onwards, each variety of apples is harvested seperately, then pressed, to produce the juice, otherwise known as must. On the nose, it is powerful and refined with nuances of plum and crystallized citrus fruits opening out to aromas of nuts (almond and hazel). On the palate, it is supple with a good long-lasting mouthfeel. Aromas of tarte tatin with hints of grilled hazelnut.
