Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

Bass Pale Ale is a classic English-style pale ale. Beautiful chestnut coloring with aromas or nuts, caramel, dried fruits and raisins. The taste is slightly sweet and a trace drying, with a nice balanced English hop finish.

Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980. Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Available filtered and pasteurised in 500ml bottles and in nitrocans. Also Nitro Keg on Tap Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011. Southwold Bitter is a beautiful copper-coloured beer, late and dry-hopped with Fuggles for a distinctive, lingering hoppiness. Brewed with the finest East Anglian Pale Ale malt barley, sourced locally to the brewery. We use Fuggles hops which we add late in the boil to preserve the herbal flavours of this traditional English hop. We add more Fuggles to each cask so that the flavour of the hops infuses into the beer. Kipling is a soft, but full flavoured, South Pacific Pale Ale with flavours of passion fruit and kiwi.

The London brewers were at the forefront of applying new scientific and technological advances to beer making. Consequently the manufacture of Porter changed considerably during its life. By the time the Old Brewery was built in 1836 Porter was a blend of 'stock' or 'stale' beer, matured in giant wooden tuns for up to two years, with young or 'mild' beer. Meantime Hospital Porter (called Naval College Old Porter in the US) is made in the same fashion. 24 months oak aging in used Bruichladdich Octomore barrels has lent a woody, intensely peaty smokiness to our 'stock' Porter, which we have blended with a younger beer. This latter adds vitality to the brew. Hospital Porter one beer that is best not over-chilled, and, like the original Porters, will mature with age. This beer has only been available on draught at the Old Brewery at the Old Royal Naval Hospital—until now. We have done our best to ensure that the beer would be recognizable to the retired sailors whom the original Royal Naval Hospital brewery was set up to supply.
