Gypsy Tart is a Flanders-style brown ale with a California touch. A beer that can trace it's origins to Great Britain, but more famously perfected in western Belgium, has been updated through our own modern techniques, delivering the sweet body and mildly tart finish that has won over numerous generations of beer drinkers in Europe. Our rendition of this wonderful beer style is perfect for both sour beer amateurs and advocates alike.

Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% beer from our foeders. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s – and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Today, it is still the reference for sour beers in the US. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used as a blending-beer with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.

Pick Your Own begins as a sour red ale that’s aged in an oak foudre with Lactobacillus and Pediococcus for two years. After adding fresh, local raspberries, cherries, strawberries, and blueberries, we age it for an additional three months. The finished beer is a vibrant, ruby red with an aroma of ripe berries and vanilla. As you might expect, berries fill the flavor. Pick Your Own finishes dry with notes of bread crust and a lingering, tart juiciness.

This ode to the classic Oud Bruin reveals the unmatched complexity of flavor, including oak and marionberries, with some bright acidity. Since it is unlike anything else we brew, we dubbed it…The Dissident. And it’s here…

James and Julie is our take on a Flemish sour brown and offers an aroma of raisins, figs, cherries, and caramelized sugar. Mahogany in color, this medium-bodied ale finishes with clean acidity and a hint of spice. We brew this sour brown ale with Pilsner, Special B, Maize, and Chocolate Malt and ferment it with our house yeast strain. It then ages for two years on stainless steel with our own blend of Lactobacillus and Pediococcus cultures.

Monk’s Cafe (Philadelphia, PA) has broken new ground on the Belgian front. The cafe has its own beer, a Flemish sour ale brewed by Van Steenberge in Ertvelde, East Flanders. Modeled on the 219-year-old brewery’s Bios Vlaamse Bourogne, the ale will be served in bottles and on tap at Monk’s, and possibly a few other locations across the country.

On 11th March 2011, a huge earthquake struck Japan and with it our brewery. Some parts of the brew house were damaged, and the brewing tanks were left leaning at an angle. Completion of the typical mashing period had to be extended to three days until electricity to the brewery was restored. Natural fermentation had already started in the mash tank during these three days with a lactic acid cultured in our brewery. This "3 Days" beer is limited to only 8,000 bottles.

The Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from. This beer is 5.5% ABV and is available in 375 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations. TASTING NOTES: AROMA: Red Poppy starts with a complex nose of tart cherries, vanilla and cinnamon like finish. There is also an underlying basis of yeast esters and wild yeast components that result in an extraordinary complex nose. TASTE: Red Poppy starts its life out as our Dawn Patrol Dark. Post primary fermentation, we blend this with some of our Amigo Lager at transfer to barrel. During the fermentation in the barrel from the micro organisms, we gain acidity which results in a beer with hints of Vanilla, Tannins and Sourness from the Cherries and the secondary fermentation and extensive aging. STYLE REFERENCE: Flanders Red Ale PAIR WITH: Duck with reductions sauces and fruit components

A Flanders-style Red Ale, oak-aged, with 45 pounds of local cherries per barrel.

A blend of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 of beer aged 2 years in large oak vats. The more important proportion of oak matured beer contributes to its fruity taste, complexity and intensity. The finish is worthy of a great wine.

During a trip to Italy to factory test bottling equipment for the brewery, our Master Brewer discovered an exquisite 14 year old balsamic vinegar in Modena, a region renowned for the world's best. This beer was aged for twenty months in red wine barrels, undergoing a very complex fermentation process to create a moderately sour, wine-like ale with a unique red fruit aroma and taste derived from added balsamic vinegar.

The basic ingredient of our Jacobins Kriek is wort made of wheat and malted barley. This wort is first boiled and then transported to the brewery’s open cooling vessel to cool down. Afterwards it spontaneously ferments in big oak barrels, giving the beer its refined flavour and aroma. To obtain its true “kriek” or cherry flavour, natural cherry juices are also added. The fruitiness of the aroma clearly reveals itself in the mouth. Our Jacobins Kriek has a well-balanced, pleasant and slightly sweet flavour, which is best enjoyed when drunk out of its own bowl-shaped glass. An excellent thirst quencher and... perfect for drinking in an outdoor café!

A foudre and barrel aged Sour Brown Ale, blended from up to 5-year-old vintages. dark fruit notes of plum and red currant, with malty undertones and a pleasantly sour finish. a 2018 World Beer Cup silver medal winner for Belgian-style Flanders Oud Bruin.

Faux Bruin is a 15% blend of 3 year aged sour brown ale along with 85% new world kettle sour brown ale. The entire batch was conditioned on oak chips imparting flavours and aromas of toasted coconut, vanilla, and wood.

Yearling is Eagle Rock’s take on a Flanders Red sour ale that sees the inside of wine barrels for a year to develop it’s tartness and oaky flavors. Brewed in celebration of the anniversary of Eagle Rock Brewery.

Petrus Aged Red is constructed from a base of Double Brown Ale. 15% Petrus Aged Pale is added to provide a dry character to the brew and give it a slight sour essence. Finally the brewer adds fresh cherries, which are evident in the rich thick head. Petrus Aged Red is a perfect blend of sweet and sour with a cherry undertone which makes this brew remarkably drinkable at 8.5% ABV.
