In times long, long ago, farmers would end the harvest season gathering berries and nuts from the hedgerows. They soon discovered that the fruit of the Blackthorn Bush (Sloe Berries) was inedible. A eureka moment came later when it was discovered that by soaking the Blackthorn fruit in gin and adding sugar, a very agreeable drink was produced. Sloe Gin was born! Plymouth Sloe Gin is based on an 1883 recipe, and has since become an important part in various classic cocktails, notably the Sloe Gin fizz.

A True English Sloe Gin is defined by its balance. Not too sweet, not too tart and you need to be able to taste the gin! To create ours we gently steep wild-harvested English Sloe berries in our classically balanced English Gin for three to four months following an old family recipe. The result is a Sloe Gin of exceptional balance in which you will find plummy aromas, hints of almond and frangipane and delicious fruity notes from the wild-foraged berries – all underpinned by a classic English Gin backbone. Classically enjoyed throughout the festive season or as a warming companion to a brisk winter’s walk, our True English Sloe Gin also pairs perfectly with English sparkling wine to create a refreshing summer serve. The balance of sweet and sharp notes from the sloe berries in Hayman’s Sloe Gin makes it an excellent pairing with game dishes. This traditional Sloe Gin recipe has been handed down through the Marshall family for generations. In England, foraging for the wild sloe berries, steeping them in gin, and making the liqueur has been a part of rural family tradition for centuries. Each batch starts with our Gin as the base to which we add whole sloe berries from Europe. This vibrantly-hued liqueur features both bright berry and citrus notes, combining ripe sweetness with fresh acidity. In Europe, it is common to enjoy Sloe Gin on its own, however it is a delicious addition to a variety of cocktails as well.

This is a limited production, completely unique expression of a traditional liqueur. We start with our handcrafted Spirit Works Sloe Gin made with real sloe berries and Spirit Works Gin, then let it rest in a new American Oak barrel. This barrel-aging process allows the spirit to breathe through the wood, rounding the sweetness and the warm spices to create something truly one of a kind. The bright, tart character of the sloes is mellowed by the interaction with the barrel. The result is a rich and velvety mouth-feel and a fuller bodied spirit. This blending of oak and sloes is a first in its category and yields something very distinct and special that we’re excited to release. A decadent ending to any meal, we recommend sipping this spirit neat and sharing with good friends and family.
