New York Distilling Company is a Brooklyn-based operation, created by Tom Potter, co-founder of the famed Brooklyn Brewery. The earliest distilleries in Brooklyn date back to the 1700s, and during Prohibition there were supposedly over 50,000 illicit stills within New York City. Matthew Calbraith Perry served as Commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 1841 through 1843. A novel two-step process launches Conniption Navy Strength Gin into the world, setting a course for a gin that is enticingly intense yet surprisingly balanced. It all starts with a gin base produced from vapor infusion in our custom-designed German pot still. Botanicals, like Indian coriander, caraway, rosemary, and cardamom, are cleverly added to juxtapose with the depth of juniper and cassia. Finally, the fresh, sweet accents of citrus and fig are individually vacuum distilled at room temperature then blended into the gin base for an aromatic and bright finish that is simultaneously smooth and powerful.

Other than it being an officially sanctioned ration – rum for enlisted men and gin for the officers – the history of this particular spirit has a few other interesting details. Technically, gin with more than 57.14% alcohol is considered Navy Strength. The reason for the high alcohol content is a practical one. Historically, gin and rum were stored in wooden barrels together with gunpowder. If either of the barrels started to leak and soaked into the gunpowder, the alcohol content had to be at least 57.14%. Anything below that and the gunpowder wouldn’t burn. The “proof” of the spirit meant the powder was safe and the gin good enough to be served to the officers.

Nose: The nose is aromatic with citrus and floral notes, namely orange blossom. Palate: The mouth-feel is smooth with an intensity of flavour thanks to the higher strength. Finish: The finish is long and protracted with pleasing juniper flavours. Overall: A well-balanced and intense Navy Strength gin.

Our navy strength gin is named for the distiller's Great Grandpa Gustaf, a steely-eyed Swede who, with his wife Anna Christine, started the family farm in 1917. At 114 proof, navy strength gin occupies a storied place in the annals of British Naval history. The daily ration of gin or rum was only allowed on board if the proof was high enough to ensure that if the liquor drenched the gun powder at sea it would still ignite.

This is a high abv gin, but you wouldn’t know it from the aroma. Cadenhead's Old Raj Gin is distinctive in that it contains a measure of saffron, the rare and costly spice derived from the crocus flower. In addition to a slightly spicy flavour, this also imparts a pale yellow colour to Old Raj. The addition of saffron is undertaken personally by the Company master blender in order to ensure a consistency in flavour and colour each time Old Raj is bottled.
