his is not the usual type cachaca that you find imported to the United States - by usual, I mean the cheap aquadiente ("firewater") - type alcohol that is drunk by the poor and used by the better off to fuel their cars. There are 1000's of brands of Cachaca in Brazil most of which are thankfully NOT imported here. Prior to a few years ago drinking Cachaca was about as stylish as drinking Mad Dog or Night Train here.

After spending a long time researching spirits and exceptional places, the company settled on Brazil: an incredible place. The more you discover, the more it impacts your soul. Brazil has the greatest cultural, natural, biological and racial diversity on the planet. If it could be defined in one word; to Vantguard, Brazil is “LIFE”. And what could be described as one of the most iconic forms of liveliness in Brazil is CACHAÇA. Renowned for its most famous mix: THE CAIPIRIÑA. Filled with the desire to bottle this life for all the world to try, Vantguard ventured out to create its own version of CACHAÇA, with Brazilian soul and premium body. Adapting the traditional spirit with differentiated nuances and aromas and mixing it as has never been mixed before. Thus CAPUCANA was created. A unique blend of sugar canes distilled and finally rounded off in American oak barrels previously used for bourbon, which are then left to further mature in the magical region of Islay, aged with peat-distilled malt whisky.

Barrel 136 is a rare expression that makes the mind wander far off, seeking to understand it. Take the finest cracker that money can buy, dip it in butterscotch sauce, then sprinkle finely-granulated sea salt on it. When you’re good and ready, dip this fine concoction into a glass of Cabernet and let it sun-dry on a tropical island beach near a rainforest. When it’s no longer dripping but not quite dry either, bite into it. That’s how Barrel 136 tastes. Whoa, there goes an albatross!

Sea salt balances the cachaça’s fresh, funky flavor, adding a savory quality and settling the overall flavor to a mouthwatering sweet red pepper.

This cachaça ages the fresh flavors from the original unaged spirit in repurposed American oak barrels. The 2-3 year process bakes the freshness of our cachaça in the heat and humidity of the rainforest. The result? Banana bread, with notes of chocolate, cinnamon bark, and coffee. A trace of pepper from the clear spirit remains, but the time spent in the barrel changes it to a toasty black pepper variation.

Our “Chameleon” expression marries the savory identity of our Silver Cachaça with the vanilla notes of our oak-kissed Barrel Aged edition. It’s aged for one year in repurposed American oak barrels, just long enough to reach mixability peaks without losing its rainforest and sugarcane funk. A hazelnut nose is continued with sweet and spicy herbs in the palate and finished with lively citrus. From tiki drinks to stirred aperitifs, this versatile cachaça is the bartender’s friend.

Our “Tanager” expression is the first two-woods cachaça broadly available in the USA and it mixes the Brazilian South’s two favorite woods. We age this cachaça in repurposed oak barrels and finish it in casks of arariba (Brazilian zebrawood) for a natural red color and a distinctive mountain earthiness. This truly unique cachaça suggests tropical fruit, grass, cinnamon bark, and other holiday spices; it can be sipped alone or as the base spirit in twists of classic cocktails like the Sazerac.

Avua is a small batch, single sourced cachaca expertly handcrafted by one of Brazil's few female distillers. She grows the sugarcane at her family's hillside farm, located about four hours north of Rio de Janeiro. Avua Prata Cachaca is a crisp, vibrant spirit which has been distilled in copper pot stills and rested in stainless steel casks for six months before being hand bottled. Distinctive notes of fresh sugarcane are complemented by delicate hints of wildflower, lemongrass and dried herbs, which add character to the classic Caipirinha as well as other excellent cocktails.
