Kostritzer Schwarzbier Lager

Kostritzer-Schwarzbier-Lager
Style: Schwarzbier, or German Black Lager The Köstritzer brewery is located in Bad Köstritz, which is close to Gera in Thuringia. The brewery was founded in 1543 and it is one of the oldest producers of Schwarzbier (black lager) in Germany. One of the most famous drinkers of Köstritzer Schwarzbier was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who sustained himself on black beer from Köstritz when he was unable to eat during a period of illness. Schwarzbier means “black beer” in German. It is a medium-bodied, malt-accented dark brew, very opaque and deep-sepia in color, with a chewy texture and a firm, creamy, long-lasting head. In spite of its dark color, it comes across as a soft and elegant brew that is rich, mild, and surprisingly balanced. It never tastes harsh, toasty or acrid. The beer is often referred to as a Schwarzpils, a “black Pils,” but, unlike a blond Pils, which can be assertively bitter, the hop bitterness in Schwarzbier is always gentle and subdued. In a glass, Schwarzbier looks much like a British dark ale, but looks can be deceiving. Schwarzbier, unlike a British ale, has a clean lager taste that leaves next to no perception of fruitiness on the palate. Instead, Schwarzbier produces very mild, almost bittersweet, notes of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Like most traditional German lagers, Schwarzbier has a malty middle, but the sweetness is never cloying or overpowering. The beer is moderately to well attenuated and the finish tends to be dry. Its alcohol level by volume is in the range of 4.5 to 5%, rarely higher. To accentuate the Schwarzbier’s dark elegance and appealing head, always serve it in a tall, fluted or tulip-shaped glass. 4.5%—5% ABV. Germany.

Brooklyn Winter Lager is our answer to the heavy ales and stouts that emerge in wintertime. Though dark in color with a sturdy presence, our Schwarzbier-inspired lager layers notes of chocolate, roasted barley, and dark bread into a 5.6% ABV frame that finishes surprisingly light and pleasantly dry. Winter means different things depending where you live, but Brooklyn Winter Lager is ready for any chill.

It’s not often that a great summer swell coincides with a full moon, but when they collide, nature affords us a rare opportunity to paddle out long after everyone has called it a day. These moments are a solitary pursuit with empty lineups, but those who carve graceful lines under a full moon understand how things can be dark lonely and rewarding at the same time. So next time you paddle in from an overcrowded beach break, remember that nothing tastes better than a cold beer after a session. We suggest a glass of this smooth roasty black lager for contemplating empty lineups and waves that go on for days. Most likely, you’ll long for epic summer swells under moon lit sessions opening the doors to isolation and empty secret spots of an age trying to pass us by. Note: Formerly Midnight Sessions Lager.

This Black Ale is low in gravity, clean, crisp, and flavor-filled; giving off a bread-like aroma. This beer proves that deep colors do not signify rich beers and our Black Ale is deceptively light on the tongue. A wise man once said, "You underestimate the power of the Dark Side! Give yourself to the Dark Side. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you" and he was right.

The name Xingu reminiscent of the Amazon rain forest and - not without justification. The specialty beer is named after a river in the Amazon region and also the ingredient cassava indicates this origin. A rough recipe of black, soft beer can already be found in a document from 1557. Some 430 years later, a journalist, a hotel owner and a lawyer came up with the idea to revive this beer recipe again. In the meantime, the brewed from corn and cassava Xingu Black Beer a covered with awards, internationally successful specialty beer . Brazil and the United States so far form the main sales regions of Xingu Black Beer, which has recently been exported to Australia and England. Now, the strong-tasting, yet light is dark beer available in Germany. Beer: Color deep black with reddish-brown sheen, foam fine pores and light brown, stick to the glass, smell very strong, reminiscent of corn, roasted flavors, savory and round. The taste is a wealth of flavors that unfold sequentially. First, roasted aromas and tangy freshness, then a beautifully bound gentle bitter note, and decaying again a pleasant, gentle roasting flavor without bitterness.

This black lager combines a big roasted malt character with plentiful additions of aromatic hops. Magnum, Cascade, Columbus, Centennial and Cluster in the kettle, hopback and dry hop additions add a piney, resinous, light citrusy flavor and aroma. A bitter finish contrasts the full malty body.

A Bohemian Black Lager is a rare and delicious style of beer, referred to in Germany as Schwarzbier. Shiner Bohemian Black Lager remains true to this old-world style by using imported Czech Saaz and Styrains Hops and select roasted malts to make it our darkest beer. First brewed to commemorate our 97th anniversary, this Bohemian Black Lager remains true to the old-world heritage of the German and Czech immigrants that settled Shiner. Prosit!

We recently changed this recipe to drop the smoked malt component to 5% from 8%, and like it even better than the last version. We think we’re back in real Schwarzbier territory now, especially after reading more about the dark beers of old Eastern Europe. The beer’s aroma is malty/espresso, with a hint of smoke. On the palate, malt, chocolate and espresso flavors take center stage, along with a hint of smoke. The sweet smokiness just offsets the more bitter/roasty notes, producing a smooth, rich brew. The hops provide balance, but virtually nothing to the aroma. This is the perfect beer to serve with a barbecued steak or tri-tip. It’s also excellent with just about any chocolate dessert!

Don’t let the color fool you, this dark lager is full of surprises. An all German malt bill lends a depth of malt complexity to its body, with a touch of oak smoked wheat bringing each flavor together. A unique mashing technique was used to impart all of the dark color with only a hint of dark malt flavors, leaving this beer incredibly smooth and drinkable. All of this balanced with German Saaz hops, and you can bet the house on this Dark Horse!

One time Mr. Raccoon took a long walk through a long field of tall grass. When he got to the edge, there was nothing. It was space. A vacuum. Being an adventuresome tiny bear rodent, he jumped off, but not into something, into nothing. As he fell through the starless abyss, in swooped Senorita Nighthawk, grabbing him by the neck scruff and flapping him off further into the darkness. There they came upon Archduke Flying Bear, and they all sang a song of bliss and ignorance and beers and laughter before going poof and becoming nothing. This nothing becomes an ethereal smooth dark lager from Thuringia.

We have taken the traditional Schwarzbier, intended to be a "session beer" with typically moderate alcohol, and almost doubled its strength to 7.6% alcohol by volume. We brewed our version with a fine balance of crystal and roasted malts and spiced it with noble hops. We fermented 5 O’Clock Shadow at cold temperatures with a select German lager yeast and cold-conditioned it for over four months to create a velvety smooth, easy-drinking springtime brew.

Trösten translating to “comfort beer”, a dark lager with rich notes of chestnut and toast. Carafa and smoked malts create rich flavors lingering on a surprisingly light, smooth finish. Brewed for the cold winter nights in Vermont, but can be enjoyed on any occasion.
