Acidulated white wheat, raspberries and an inoculation of lactobacillus in the fermenter give this American ale its tart, fruity taste. Low hop levels let the special sour flavors dominate, and rice syrup helps yield a particularly light finish and body. This is a real summer refresher.

This delicious creation was truly a product of creativity, ingenuity and luck. In the summer of 2013 we took a test batch of our sessional sour summer ale, Provincial, that didn't quite hit gravity, and decided to have some fun with it! We added a heavy dose of raspberries. The end result was so delicious, we decided to recreate it! This delightfully tart fruit beer is stimulating and refreshing, with a citrusy berry aroma which transitions to a subtly sweet and tart finish. - Pairs well with Day Drinking.

Strawberry Darling is a tart Berliner Weisse brewed with heaps of strawberries and a pinch of peach and plum. This charming beer strikes a balance between soft wheat and ripe strawberry, then finishes with a gentle, sour twang. Whether you’re on a city stoop or a farmhouse porch, Strawberry Darling is the perfect beer for slowing down and enjoying the moment.

We’re on a first-name basis with our new German-style tart wheat beer. Meet Frederick H. (The “H” stands for “Hottenroth”.) But this isn’t Fred as you knew him with Sarah. This is a Berliner Weisse with an entirely different personality. At his core, Frederick H. embodies some of the elements you’d expect in a Berliner Weisse-style beer, such as a tart flavor profile from lactobacillus, a hint of brettanomyces and traditionally low ABV. He gets a little racy though, and gains even more funky and earthy notes from house cultures and fermentation in our oak foeders at Bruery Terreux. After nature takes its course, Frederick H. emerges with a bright, refreshing body, palate-cleansing tartness and au naturel rawness.

AKA Weißbier Bock

New Wave is a kettle soured, Strawberry Berliner Weisse brewed with patio sessions in mind. This bright pink Berliner Weisse is light, tart, effervescent, and clean on the finish. Strawberries are the dominant flavor profile, as each batch is fermented on over 300 pounds of real strawberries.

Sour Ale dry-hopped with Citra, Galaxy and Mosaic. Brewed with pilsner malt, raw wheat, flaked and malted oats. Notes of passionfruit, Earl Grey tea, kumquat, pine nut and lime.

Thick Strawberry Goo is a smoothie-style Berliner Weisse. Brewed with over 420 pounds of strawberry, raspberry, and passionfruit. Tart and jammy at 5.6%, the “Goo” brewed with a little bit of lactose, a dose of Madagascar vanilla beans, then dry-hopped with Motueka. Think strawberry jam, red sour patch kids, and tart cherries.

Blueberry Pop! is the newest in our series of creamsicle-inspired dessert Berliners. This time, we’ve paired the creamy sweetness of vanilla and milk sugar with blueberries. Refreshing and balanced as always.

Pale ale brewed with herbs

This German wheat beer owes its lemony tartness to the addition of lactobacillus to the brew kettle. The resulting acidity balances the sweetness of malted wheat, resulting in a tart, refreshing, spritzy tipple that many a faithful wine lover has fallen for. Legend has it Napoleon’s troops, during their wars in Prussia, dubbed it the Champagne of the North. Santé and Prost!

Raspberry Jam was initially developed at our brewpub, the Tallgrass Tap House. It became an instant hit and we decided it should “go on tour” as part of the Tallgrass lineup. Its crisp, natural tartness is balanced by the addition of raspberries, creating a sour wheat ale that’s light-bodied and refreshing.

You are about to enjoy Lightning Brewery’s Sauerstorm Ale, a German-style Berliner Weisse - a beer style characteristic of summer beer from the Berlin area of Germany. Traditionally this beer is served with a dash of tart raspberry syrup to enhance both beer and fruit flavors. We have brewed this beer with pilsner malt, malted wheat, water, hops and yeast. Please note Sauerstorm Ale is bottled unfiltered for greater flavor. If you like more haze in your beer, you may gently roll the bottle before decanting to your glass.

Michael Jackson describes “Berlin White Beer” as having an “insistent sparkle, a fragrant fruitiness in the nose, a sharp, dry palate, and a frisson of quenching, sour acidity in the finish.” North Coast Tart Cherry Berliner Weisse is made with the juice of Michigan Montmorency cherries, whose addition softens the lactic finish of the beer and gives it a springtime blush.
