The 2019 vintage centers around 15-25-year-old Grenache from Redwood Valley Mendocino and Lake County, with the introduction of Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel from Mendocino County. Smaller percentages of Grenache, Malbec, and Pinot Noir from Clarksburg complete the blend. All Smoke Tree’s vineyard partners are certified sustainable.

Marc Piro knew he wanted to be a winemaker when he was 9 years old. He sat in the crowded backseat of his family’s beige Mercedes diesel station wagon as they drove through the vineyards of Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley, and, inspired, he announced, “Mom, I want a vineyard.” Her response was curt, “Well, then, get a good job.” It took Marc a while to get a full time job, but in the process he has spent years traveling the world and making wine under the supervision of talented winemakers in Argentina, New Zealand, Western Australia, and California. He now works with the Au Bon Climat and Qupé wineries in Santa Maria, with Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist, two of the legendary names of Santa Barbara County. From Jim and Bob, and from each international experience, Marc has picked up different methods, tricks, and secrets, eventually tying them together into his own unique winemaking style. In 2016, he is celebrating his 10th harvest. True to his boyhood promise, Marc is fulfilling his dream by launching the Piro Wine Company, a boutique label focused on his favorite varietal, Pinot Noir. As he puts it, “I strive to make old- world-style wines from the new world: extremely delicious wines of balance, elegance, and structure.” Bright and zingy on the nose, this wine has aromas of beautiful oak and fresh cut herbs, lavender, sage, and miniature strawberries, finishing with petrichor and wet underbrush. It has earthy, yet fruity flavors, reminiscent of a forest floor doused with bright fruit.

Flavorful aromas of plum and fig combine with delicate hints of sage and pipe tobacco. A full bodied wine with structured tannins and an excellent finish. The rich fruit flavors found in this Merlot complement a wide range of dishes, including braised beef, rich stews and pastas.

Sourced from several blocks at Wildwood Vineyards, this wine is a great expression of what our Family Estate has to offer. A harmonious and concentrated balance of classic varietal characteristics and satisfying mid-palate weight. This expressive and versatile wine pairs well with rich cheeses like Brie or Roquefort, Italian pizza, or even a cheeseburger.

The wine is full-bodied and complex, displaying classic Cabernet structure and finesse.

The Silver Label Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a blending of grapes grown from select North Coast vineyards. This combination offers full, rich flavors of berry, cassis and black cherry with hints of vanilla in the background. Aging with French oak adds complexity and depth, resulting in a high quality Cabernet Sauvignon with great value.

Tasting Notes This 2010 Merlot has upfront, bright aromatics with berries, kirsch, and holly. A second wave follows with a dusting of cardamom, and brambles. It stands with a lean composure, great acidity, and high tones. Cherries and pomegranate are pronounced on the palate with hints of allspice. An impressive backbone and mouthfeel will allow this merlot to age for quite some time. Vineyard Notes Yet another difficult growing season. Spring was erratic giving us plenty of rain after the fruit set and heat spikes followed soon after that. We were on our toes adjusting with each jab nature gave us. Yields were down 30% and the fruit that we deemed worthy enough to survive the cluster thinning and green drops were immensely round and intense. The Merlot yields were down to about 2 tons and acre and the Cabernet yields down to about 1.5 tons an acre. As a result there isn't much to go around this vintage so get them while you can.
