Wente Vineyards Estate Grown Morning Fog Chardonnay is named for the morning coastal fog pushed by Pacific wind streams into the bowl of the San Francisco Bay, and lured inland by Livermore Valley’s unique East-West orientation. This daily phenomenon moderates the climate to produce excellent, beautifully balanced Chardonnay. Planted on various Wente clones, which are all harvested and vinified separately, the variation within the vineyards adds to the complexity of the wine. The 2018 Morning Fog Chardonnay bursts with aromatics from citrus, lemon curd, pear and toasty oak. This wine is balanced by hints of vanilla and citrus on the palate, finishing with a nice acidity.

Wente Vineyards Estate Grown Wetmore Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is named after one of the Livermore Valley’s most prominent pioneers, California’s fi rst agricultural commissioner renowned for planting vine cuttings from many of Bordeaux’s top Châteaux in the temperate Livermore Valley in the 1880s. The descendants of vines Wetmore brought from France thrive today in the gravelly loam soils of our certifi ed sustainable estate vineyards between the Arroyo del Valle and the Arroyo Mocho, streams fl owing from the southern hills of the Livermore Valley. From their origins in Margaux in the 19th century to the present, only the best of these Cabernet Sauvignon vines have been selected for each new generation planted. And they are prized for making wines with intensity, depth of flavor, and rich, lush body.

Flavors of red cherry, anise, and a hint of vanilla, abound in our Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is well balanced with medium tannins, a smooth mid-palate and a spicy, coffee finish.

Wente Vineyards Estate Grown Sandstone Merlot comes from a gently sloping formation of hills running along the southeastern corner of the historic Livermore Valley. With warm days, cool nights, well-drained sandstone soils, and incoming breezes from the San Francisco Bay, the Wente family’s hillside vineyard is an ideal place to grow outstanding Merlot and Bordeaux varieties. The 2016 Sandstone Merlot has inviting notes of ripe fig and pomegranate, with a hint of sandalwood. This delicious Merlot bursts with berry flavors from cranberry, grilled cherry and acai, finishing with a nice lingering acidity.

Vöcal wines are the brainchild of sommelier/winemaker Ted Glennon, whose mission is to let his vineyard sources do most of the talking. This expression of Grüner Veltliner from the Santa Cruz Mountains is spot-on—right up there with its Austrian contemporaries. One of the things we can’t help but do when evaluating California wines is compare them to their “Old World” exemplars. It’s impossible not to, but it’s a little unfair to the California wines: They’re treated like “cover versions” rather than original compositions. Nevertheless, as we all know, sometimes the covers live up to—or even eclipse—the originals (consider Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” versus Otis Redding’s, or the Napa Cabs of the 1976 “Paris Tasting” versus Bordeaux). Our hats come off today for our friend Ted Glennon of Vöcal Vineyards, whose 2017 “Alfaro Vineyard” Grüner Veltliner does full justice to the Austrian originals while also singing in its own clear, Californian voice. It’s a delicious, invigorating Grüner: spot-on in terms of varietal character and structured like a Smaragd-level wine from the Wachau. Tack on a little California Coast ‘sea-spray’ character and you’ve got a killer cool-climate white to enjoy through the summer and beyond. Along with his collaborator Ian Brand (San Francisco Chronicle “Winemaker of the Year” last year), Ted is a champion of vineyards influenced by the cold, deep Monterey Bay—and he nailed it with this one. The Alfaro Vineyard is at the southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, about four miles from Monterey Bay. Sitting at 500+-feet elevation and facing southwest, right in the path of the wind and fog whipped up by the Bay, its situation and rocky, sandy soils bear a strong resemblance to the vineyards of Grüner Veltliner’s Austrian homeland. Richard Alfaro was inspired to plant Grüner after falling in love with the variety at a dinner featuring the wines of Wachau (Austria) legend Nikolaihof; at present, his is the only vineyard planted to the grape in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Glennon has had access to Alfaro-grown Grüner since 2014, and while 2017 proved to be a hot, difficult year in parts of the region, the Alfaro Vineyard fared quite well in the end. As Ted explained in his tasting notes, a record heatwave “sadly roasted our beloved Lilo Pinot Noir Vineyard, and caused havoc for many beloved sites. However, our patch of Alfaro's Grüner Veltliner soaked up the heat and developed some incredible flavors and compelling structure.” Vöcal’s Alfaro Vineyard Grüner was fermented and aged in a mixture of used French oak barrels (30%) and stainless steel drums, and it displays a pitch-perfect balance of richness and raciness. In the glass, it’s a bright yellow-gold with flecks of green and silver at the rim, with aromas of tart green apple, Asian pear, citrus, wild herbs, white pepper, and wet stones. Medium-plus in body, with a sunny core of ripe fruit, it finishes with mouthwatering freshness and a salty kick after leaving a big impression on the mid-palate. It is ready to drink now and over the next few years: Simply pull the cork and let it rip at 45-50 degrees; it will make a great partner to a lemony seafood preparation, an herby salad, or really anything fresh and bright you think up. It’s a really evocative, well-made wine—respect!

Since 1883, five generations of our family have handcrafted fine wines that express the very best of our vineyards and winemaking expertise. Our Beyer Ranch has historically been a premier location for Zinfandel. The estate vineyards are planted on carefully selected sites on the sloping benches that lead to the banks of the Arroyo del Valle and Arroyo Mocho streams. Grapes from these Zinfandel vineyards produce luscious wines with deep richness. Beyer Ranch Zinfandel is welcoming with luscious fruit notes such as red cherry, boysenberry and fig. Complemented by hints of black tea, and hibiscous, this wine has smooth tannins and is medium-bodied with a smooth finish.

These well-loved varieties are crafted from selected Central Coast vineyards. We use traditional, time-honored techniques such as small-lot barrel fermentation and oak aging. Our highly acclaimed wines represent superior quality for their modest price.

In the wonderful tradition of rosés found in Portugal, Spain, Italy and France, our Mourvèdre Rosé is perfect on its own, well-chilled. It shows pleasant aromas of fresh plums and passion fruit, and flows onto the palate with a light-body and layers of raspberry, watermelon and passion fruit. The finish has a notable, crisp freshness.

Just as an artist chooses their canvas, we have selected each vineyard for its individual characteristics that enhance each of our grape varietals. The Livermore Valley is the perfect climate for growing world-class wine grapes. Forty-degree temperature swings daily during the growing season allow for longer hang time as the grapes mature during the warmer, sunny days, yet slow down and maintain their acidity during the cool, breezy nights. This not only creates lower yield, higher concentrated berries, but allows for full development of sugar, adding complexity to the grapes, as well as producing bright, bold fruit flavors in the wine. From our Livermore Valley vineyards, our portfolio of wines includes traditional Bordeaux inspired red blends of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Crown Block Vineyard; Award winning Chardonnays and a field-blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah from the Hoffman/DeMayo Vineyard; Merlot from the Picazo Vineyard; and Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Syrah from the Madden Ranch vineyard. From Rava’s Blackjack Vineyard in Monterey we source our rare and exceptional Grüner Veltliner as well as an expressive Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Each wine features an image of its terroir painted by Darcie, which serves to communicate the characteristics of each vineyard.
