Almost entirely from Merlot, this wine is packed with wood as much as fruit. The wine has a smoky, burnt character that will need to disappear to allow the black fruits to come through.

Saint-Émilion is without doubt one of the greatest of all Bordeaux appellations. It is here that the Merlot grape, blended with Cabernet Franc, reaches its apex. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, the first area of vineyards to be recognized as such. Some of the most famous châteaux in the world are located here: Ausone, Angélus, Pavie, and Cheval Blanc to name a few. Yet, Saint-Émilion is also home to excellent values, delicious wines that express the fruit forward drinkability of Merlot combined with the complexity and intensity these blends can achieve. One of the best I've had recently is from a fabulous estate — tucked in between some of the best châteaux in the region — one that flies under the radar... for now: Château La Croix Montlabert, the second label of the Grand Cru Château Montlabert. This is truly, a Grand Cru on the rise. Michel Descazes Montlabert founded this picturesque château in the 1700's, when its original function was that of a hunting lodge. Château Montlabert, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, lies on the "Route de Libourne" and is surrounded by illustrious neighbors: Châteaux Cheval Blanc, Clos des Jacobins and Figeac. The vineyards are planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on 13 hectares over sand with clay, gravel and limestone soils. The Castel family owns the estate, and since 2009 has invested significantly in elevating the status of the château to that of a world-class estate. In 2010, Hubert de Bouard of Château Angélus came on board as their consultant, and working with Ludovic and Maxime Hérault — the château's manager and cellar master — they have improved the precision in the vineyard and the meticulous attention to detail in the cellar. The results are outstanding.

Chateau-Cap-d’Or-Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion
Cap d’Or is the chateau’s second wine, but rather than being secondary it is rather its feminine counterpart. This femininity reveals itself in a floral, raspberry touch and in freshness and minerality. The wine is fine and seductive, with a very delicate hint of oak that reinforces the fruit and the terroir. Historically, Cap d’Or was named Cap Doro by the Romans in the First Century when they decided to clear the south facing slopes. Superb exposure to the sunlight allows for an excellent maturation of the grapes and seeds, providing the basis for a very natural vinification.

Clos-Saint-Martin-Saint-Emilion-Grand-Cru
75% Merlot – 15% Cabernet Franc – 10% Cabernet Sauvignon Established in 1850, this jewel-like estate is situated on Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau, adjacent to Château Canon. Named after the neighboring church of Saint-Martin, Clos St. Martin is owned and managed by Sophie Fourcade, a descendant of the Reiffers family, established wine producers in Saint-Emilion since the 17th century, with Michel Rolland acting as consultant winemaker. At just 1.33 hectare, Clos St Martin is the smallest classified growth in Saint-Émilion. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, are planted on clay and limestone soils, typical of the appellation’s limestone plateau, with southwestern exposure. After the hand-harvest, the grapes undergo an eight-day pre-fermentation cold maceration at 8°C. The must is fermented in new oak barrels for 48 days; malolactic fermentation also takes place in new oak barrels. The first four months of aging are spent on the lees, stirred twice every week, allowing the wine to develop volume and body. The wine is generally aged for 20 months in new oak barrels.
Château Tour Baladoz St Emilion Grand Cru

Château-Tour-Baladoz-St-Emilion-Grand-Cru
St Emilion is famed for its limestone outcrops and caves, and Tour Baladoz is one of many properties whose former cellars lie beneath the vineyards, with the vine roots trailing in the cool air. Remarkably, this keeps the vineyards refreshed in dry vintages and stops them from being waterlogged in wet ones. Delicious rich, evolving red and black fruits with a hint of oak spice, powerful yet elegant, this is a serious dinner wine.
