Wine in Penedes

Varieties: 40% Macabeu, 30% Xarel-lo 30% Garnatxa, 10% Malvasia Owned by the Suriol family, Cellers de Can Suriol del Castell is known for making wines and vintage Cava with personality in the organic winemaking tradition. They make wines under the Suriol brand which are all estate bottled fruit and then they make the Azimut line from purchased grapes from their neighbors, all of whom work organically. The Can Suriol vineyards and winery are situated in Alt Penedes, Province of Barcelona, Catalunya. This region is justifiably famous for producing fine wines and cava. The cultivation of the Can Suriol vineyards is done by 100% organic methods as certified by the CCPAE (until 2007 NOP certification).

From bush-trained vines planted in calcareous clay soils of various ages, the grapes are hand-harvested, undergo vineyard sorting and de-stemmed. Els Vinyerons was created by Alex and Amós as a result of their friendship and motivation to produce still wines from Penedes, made with very limited intervention. With this aim, they started a deep and long process to select vineyards that had the potential to communicate through the fruit the essence of their terroir. They both agree that there is no other option than to produce natural wines with local varieties. They only use indigenous yeasts, no enological products, thus working with the philosophy that wines are first and foremost made in the vineyards. Saltamartí (grasshopper) is named after the grasshoppers, important part of the ecosystem in Penedes. Saltamarti is a unique blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha. It is an expressive red wine with fresh aromas of red fruits (red cherry, red plum), black fruits (black berry, bramble), with delicate herbal notes (fennel, lavender, dill) and fine grained tannins. It is a wine that shows great complexity as it opens up (decanting recomanded). Unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfite.

The brilliant 2009 Brut Reserva Rose sparkling wine was made from an intriguing blend of 60% Monastrell (Mourvedre), 20% Garnacha (Grenache) and 20% Pinot Noir, and was aged 18 months in bottle prior to being released. The fermentation was done in bottle, which is called Methode Champenoise. Fresh strawberry, cherry and blueberry-like aromas jump from the glass of this rose. It possesses impressive purity, effervescence, tiny, well-formed bubbles, good body, a slight austerity, and a dry, surprisingly intense style. Ruben Parera is a young winemaker from the Upper Penedès region – known for its high-altitude, low-yield terroir – who, having finished his oenological studies, has converted his family’s farm to biodynamic practices. Ruben’s early vintages were technically correct but stilted; as he has progressed as a winemaker, he has thrown out the textbook and learned to take cues from his terroir. This refreshing, friendly table wine is a blend of Xarel-lo, Garnacha Blanca, and Sumoll – in other words, a red with the soul of a white.

Origin: In this small (29 ha.) vineyard only the most select Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown. These are used to make strictly limited quantities of Torres' most prestigious red wine, now known to connoisseurs all over the world. In the Paris Wine Olympiad, the 1970 vintage triumphed over some of the most famouswines in the world, including Chateau Latour. This success has been repeated on several other occasions, with Gran Coronas Mas La Plana notching up numerous other international awards. Serving Suggestions: This wine's noble and healthy tannins will complement the best meat and game dishes. Serve at 17 - 18 ºC. Tasting Notes: Intense aroma showing all the classic characteristics of the native land of Mas La Plana, together with notes of truffle, toast and wild red berry conserve. Great body and breadth on the palate, with juicy tannins that become balanced and elegant.
