Chateau Redortier Gigondas

Chateau-Redortier-Gigondas
The wines of the Southern Rhone are the most under valued reds in France. They garner huge press, the public, you the wine lover, absolutely adore them and today I have one of the best values I have tasted from the region this year. All of you know the great Chateauneuf du Pape's that come from the Southern Rhone but many of you don't know is that there is another is another appellation in the Southern Rhone that gets as much press and ratings as Chateauneuf du Pape but can be had at half the price. The appellation is Gigondas, gets 100pt scores by the pundits, and is every bit as good as Chateauneuf's. Today I bring an absolute gem, the 2009 Chateau Redortier Gigondas, the best Gigondas I have found this year to offer and it is an absolute steal for what's in the bottle. The wine received a huge 5 stars by Decanter Magazine, the world's oldest and biggest wine publication in the world. They have over forty Masters Of Wine rating wines for them. 5 stars is the highest award they give a wine. It's like 95 100 pts. by the other publications. You cannot score higher, this wine got that score! This is Redortier luxury Cuvee sourced from a tiny old vine 2.47 acre parcel planted with 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. The vineyard is one the Southern slope of the Dentelles de Montmirail Mountains and are the highest elevation plantings in the appellation. Vines were planted in the 1950's and 60's with astonishingly low yields. Finesse, elegance and complexity are in the "DNA" of Redortier's Gigondas. From his small Gigondas estate, Etienne de Menthon produces one of the most impressive wines of the appellation... The wine is traditionally made, although a relatively high percentage of Syrah is included in the blend, giving the wine a deeper color and an unmistakable black fruit character... Chateau Redortier's Gigondas is delicious when released, but it is so well endowed, concentrated, and powerful that it will easily last for a decade or more. This is world class Rhone at a tremendous price. Big, rich, opulent yet has great finesse and elegance, a great wine at the price.

This blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah is exquisite. It is a softer, more feminine style red than their Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with stunning dark fruit and mineral aromas that emanate from the glass. There are lush blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors woven around a wonderful mineral structure that runs from attack to finish. There are also notes of lilac and light spice on this full-bodied red, with velvety smooth tannins that glide ever so softly over the palate through the wine's long finish.

Domaine Roucas de Saint Pierre is a winegrower based in France in the Rhone Valley region. Syrah Is the typical grape for wines from the Northern Rhône Valley and is successful all over the world. Domaine du Roucas de St Pierre covers over 12 acres, lying in a superb natural amphitheater oriented south-south east, dominated by granite cliffs almost 350 feet high, “Les dentelles de Montmirail”. The vineyards were originally planted in the second century by the romans and produce some of the most expressive wines here. Syrah and Grenache form the basis of our Crus. grapes are harvested by hand and completely destemmed. Then, grapes are kept on cold temperature for a maximum of flavors and extraction. After a few days, we leave slowly the temperature getting up during the fermentation process Lon batting 25 days with daily pneumatic punching down and pumping over for a maximal extraction. The wine is aged in subterranean cement tanks for several years before maturing in bottles in an air conditioning cellar. The winemaking and bottling take lace on their property. Whiffs of dried strawberry and plum introduce this blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. It's a gorgeously fruity, fleshy wine with opulent body but also nuanced by hints of crushed earth, leather and violet. A supple wine with soft tannins to enjoy,

This wine presents a pretty garnet color, limpid with brilliant reflections. The nose is rich and expressive, with notes of ripe red fruit, cherry, plum, mixed with spices, licorice, pepper, and hints of garrigue. The mouth is very elegant, with fine and coated tannins, a balanced mid-palate, both fresh and oily, and a persistent finish, always on spices, on blackberry jam, with some notes of cocoa.
