The Chalk Hill Chardonnay boasts toasty vanilla and spice due to time spend in seasoned French oak barrels during fermentation. During the twelve months of barrel aging, we regularly stirred the "lees" in barrel, which imparts an elegant fullness and creamy texture on the palate. In the glass, the wine is both creamy and crisp, with flavors of golden pear, vanilla, Meyer lemon and a hint of minerality on the long finish. Enjoy over the next one to three years with soft cheeses, fresh crab or roasted pork loin.

Chardonnay is a winemaker’s grape, molded into its most interesting self by native yeast fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels and frequent lees stirring. It is a labor-intensive wine, but the rewards are most certainly worth the hard work and attention. The Chalk Hill Estate Chardonnay expresses aromas of lemon, orange blossom and a hint of vanilla bean from the oak influence. Balanced, complex and full flavors of lemon oil, orange zest, and crème brûlée follow on the palate. This wine is known for its long, rich and elegant finish, and this vintage is no exception.

Our Merlot's soft yet elegant structure is created in the vineyard through low yields, abundant sun exposure, canopy management and hang time. The wine presents a balance and elegance between ripe Merlot fruit and site-specific earthiness. Aromas of summer brush, huckleberry, eucalyptus and a slight smokiness are matched on the palate with violets, blueberry fruit, milk chocolate and moist earth.

We grow the Chardonnay in reclaimed creek bed, and the grapes have a pronounced mineral character unique to this patch of vineyard. The wine is aged in neutral French oak barrels for 5 months on the lees, with regular battonage (stirring). What these protocols achieve is an appealing brioche-like aroma, a creamy texture, and complex and balanced fruit flavors. Layers of ripe pineapple, passionfruit, and orange blossom, and hint of yellow apple. The racy acidity laces it all together, with a persistent finish. I’d sip this with a cheese soufflé, steamed lobster or pasta primavera. Drink now, or hold for 2-3 years.

Occupying the northeast corner of the larger Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill is named for its unique, volcanically-derived, chalky white ash soils. Our Block 831 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is grown at higher elevations on the western part of Chalk Hill, imparting dense aromas of dark chocolate with beautiful blackberry and cassis notes on the palate. You could pay $50 or more for the same wine in a different bottle!
