WINE DESCRIPTION Nero d’Avola is the most important red wine grape in Sicily, and is one of Italy’s most important indigenous varieties. It is named after Avola, a town in the far south of Sicily and its wines are compared to New World Shiraz, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavors. “The Black Grape of Avola” seems to have been selected by growers near Avola several hundred years ago. Initially it was confined to the southern tip of Sicily, but more recently has spread throughout the island. Its percentage is uncertain, though for sure there are no significant plantings outside of Sicily. TASTING NOTES Dark ruby red color. The bouquet on the nose is intense and typical with hints of dark cherries and blackberries together with more complex aromas of wet leather, black olive and Indian ink in the background. On the palate it is dry, rich, full-bodied, with a refreshing, long and fruity finish.

The Rosso di Contrada is made from Nero d’Avola grapes from the vineyards planted in the Buonivini district, in the Val di Noto, with different soil chromaticity, exposure and gradients. Here the soils are calcareous and the vineyards are raised with the classic peacock alberello. The vinification is in steel with indigenous yeasts and long maceration of the must with the skins. Matured in barrels for at least a year, followed by a long refinement in the bottle. Rosso di Contrada is an intense ruby red color. The nose is intense and complex, with hints of red fruit, floral and spicy notes. On the palate it is warm and full-bodied, with good freshness and soft tannins. Closes along with fruity notes.

Vino-Lauria-Nero-D’avola-Rose-Zio-Paolo-2014@
The progenitor of the Lauria wine family. Zio Paolo is the first wine that Vito has chosen to make and it takes its curious name from the vineyard – of wide and flat land around Alcamo – which is at its origin. A (100%) Nero d'Avola that, unlike the Alacre, also of the same grape, is less complex and more fresh on the palate. Very fruity on the nose, bears notes of strawberry and wild berries.

Hedonis is our finest effort, and a genuine expression of the rich history that Nero d’Avola represents. Like the diverse multicultural influences of Sicily’s history which make it unique and distinctive from the rest of the Italian peninsula, we made this ageworthy wine to distinguish itself among the island’s most notable offerings of Nero d’Avola. The vineyards are cultivated in the lands of western Sicily, near the richly historic city of Agrigento, where Greek ruins still stand as testimony to the ancient influence on the island. Hedonis has hints of dried red fruits, anise and sweet spices, notes of almond, vanilla and tobacco. There is a profound structure on the palate along with a velvety and juicy attack, finishing with soft and sweet tannins. Excellent when paired with piquante cheeses, and a perfect companion to red meats, salami, and baked pastas in hearty sauce. Cheers!
