WINE DESCRIPTION Nero d’Avola is the most important red wine grape in Sicily, and is one of Italy’s most important indigenous varieties. It is named after Avola, a town in the far south of Sicily and its wines are compared to New World Shiraz, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavors. “The Black Grape of Avola” seems to have been selected by growers near Avola several hundred years ago. Initially it was confined to the southern tip of Sicily, but more recently has spread throughout the island. Its percentage is uncertain, though for sure there are no significant plantings outside of Sicily. TASTING NOTES Dark ruby red color. The bouquet on the nose is intense and typical with hints of dark cherries and blackberries together with more complex aromas of wet leather, black olive and Indian ink in the background. On the palate it is dry, rich, full-bodied, with a refreshing, long and fruity finish.

Hedonis is our finest effort, and a genuine expression of the rich history that Nero d’Avola represents. Like the diverse multicultural influences of Sicily’s history which make it unique and distinctive from the rest of the Italian peninsula, we made this ageworthy wine to distinguish itself among the island’s most notable offerings of Nero d’Avola. The vineyards are cultivated in the lands of western Sicily, near the richly historic city of Agrigento, where Greek ruins still stand as testimony to the ancient influence on the island. Hedonis has hints of dried red fruits, anise and sweet spices, notes of almond, vanilla and tobacco. There is a profound structure on the palate along with a velvety and juicy attack, finishing with soft and sweet tannins. Excellent when paired with piquante cheeses, and a perfect companion to red meats, salami, and baked pastas in hearty sauce. Cheers!
Planeta Santa Cecilia Nero D’avola, Noto DOC

Planeta-Santa-Cecilia-Nero-D’avola,-Noto-DOC
100% Nero d’Avola. A very spicy fruity wine, brilliant and clear, perfumed with carob, bergamot and orange peel. Ripe fruit and balsamic notes on the palate dissolve to accompany dense tannins that fits the structure of the wine. For five centuries and seventeen generations, the Planeta family has been involved in Sicilian agriculture. Their work on the island has contributed to the revitalization of Sicilian winemaking, now one of the most dynamic and sought-after viticultural regions in the world. Planeta’s journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Here on Italy's most enchanting island, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Years of careful research paid off when the Planeta wines were met with immediate critical acclaim upon introduction in the U.S. in the late 1990s. 91pts Vinous 9/17 2013V 91pts Wine & Spirits 12/18 2013V

Mandrarossa-Nero-d’Avola
Mandrarossa wines were born out of a mission for excellence when a team of industry experts joined forces to create high quality wines of both indigenous and international varietals from Sicily to introduce to the world. This team of experts identified top estates that yield the best quality and worked closely with select growers to deliver the truest and highest valued expression of the selected varietals offered by Mandrarossa wines. Ideal microclimatic conditions of intense sunlight, coastal sea breezes and rich chalky soils combine to produce these rich, aromatic wines. Mandrarossa Nero d'Avola thrives on a sandy, coastal terrain. The proximity to the sea gives this wine its excellent structure and mellow nature. Notes of black cherry, prune and red mulberry make it a complex and rich wine. Intense ruby-red color with purple highlights. Captivating aromas of black cherries, plums and red mulberries. Smooth and velvety palate. Pairs well with charcuterie, hard cheeses, and roasted meats.

VARIETY: NERO D'AVOLA - AND A CHEEKY DASH OF ZIBIBBO* REGION: BARMERA, RIVERLAND SOIL: ANCIENT SANDY LIMESTONE SOILS VINTAGE: 2019 ALCOHOL: 12.7% ABV WINEMAKER'S NOTES If anywhere in the world could make the freshest, zippiest style of Red - you'd expect it to be in the middle of the desert. Hailing from some of the most ancient soils on earth - The Riverland, is a complete underdog region that epitomises what it is to craft fine wine on the edge. Rich red earth, sandy soils covering limestone. Challenging, avant-garde - and one of the most exciting wines we've crafted to date. We're intensely passionate about Nero d'Avola and it's clear potential in the warm, sun-drenched spots of Australia. The insane water-efficiency of this variety coupled with no additions in the vineyard or winery (save for a small component of SO2 at bottling) displays the potential for this variety to craft succulent, juicy, aromatic and supremely refreshing wine. A touch of ancient vine Zibibbo lifts the aroma into supreme smashability. Fresh. A.F. You've been warned. *Big Love to the No Mafia crew, who in 2018 collaborated with us to produce the most tasty thing to ever have come out of Unico Zelo: Nero Z - it was so damn popular our previously named 'The River' Nero evolved hand-in-hand with a dash of Zibibbo to become 'Fresh A.F.' in honour of their blood, sweat and tears - oh...and the fact folks wouldn't stop hounding us for it!

Only one third of the wine is aged in barrique for 4 months, just the needed time to build some structure without compromising the freshness. The wine strikes with its density and its royal ruby color. In one’s nose is rich of scents, deep and pure. Mature red fruits merged with herbs and ripe cherry. Expresses excellent varietal character, featuring smooth, velvety tannins and incredibly harmonious balance.

It is evident that food and wine are harmoniously linked in Sicily, defining the region. It is known for its rich and full-bodied wines, as the Nero d’Avola is produced using an “appassite” method of naturally drying the grapes prior to harvest. Our Nero d’Avola appassite has a ruby-red color. The bouquet is slightly spicy and has notes of dried figs and ripe fruits of blackberry and boysenberry. The finish is round velvety with notes of vanilla.

Vrucara is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in a vineyard of which the land has always been called “Vrucara.” It takes this name due to the presence of vruca, a Sicilian word for a bush that grows spontaneously around the vineyard. This herb has aromas of menthol mixed with those of incense oil. Transferred into the old, unique vines, we notice this aroma in the wine.
