Louis-Jadot-Beaujolais-Villages

90+-Cellars-Beaujolais-Lot-158
This flirtatiously fruity wine is made from the Gamay grape grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, which is rare for a wine at this price. Most everyday-priced Beaujolais wines comes from the south. The vines grow in the traditional freestanding bush or goblet style near the villages La Chapelle de Guinchay and Romaneche-Thorins which lie just east of the Crus, Fleurie and Chenas. The soil is a free-draining mixture of decomposed granite, clay and sand. Grapes are picked by hand and vinified in the tradition of carbonic maceration which helps to extract fruit rather than tannin, producing bright, lively wines best consumed fresh and while youthful.

"A truly convivial wine. Owing to the careful blending of various terroirs, the result is a wine of great charm. It has a lovely raspberry colour and a brilliant hue. The nose is both refined and intense, with notes of violet, peony and red fruit syrup. As you drink it, it feels fresh and silky. Both freshness and fruit remain for quite a long time on the palate". - Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Remi and his wife Laurence began purchasing vines in and around the Brouilly and Cote de Brouilly appellations in 2006. In 2010 they bottled their first vintage, and since then their wines have acquired an avid following in the Parisian natural wine scene. This is an easy-drinking Beaujolais-Villages, with a good amount of minerality. It undergoes a short carbonic maceration and aging in concrete tanks. Lighter than their offerings of Brouilly and Cotes de Brouilly, it is an elegant young expression of the Gamay grape.

When he isn’t running the wine program at The Heathman in Portland, James operates a small and growing winery specializing in single-vineyard wines with minimal manipulation through SE Wine Collective in Portland. James’ inspiration behind winemaking stemmed from the realization that although he loved introducing wines to his diners as a sommelier, he wanted to be “the guy who actually put the juice in the bottle”.James encourages his consumers to “try newbies” when it comes to ordering or purchasing wines. “They have a vision that comes from managing a 100-case production rather than a 100,000-case production, so that’s their baby. And that wine, for better or worse, has more personality than the majority of large-production wines. I believe that wholeheartedly.”

Guy Breton Régnié Beaujolais

Guy-Breton-Régnié-Beaujolais
Régnié: • First produced in 2008, the Régnié is sourced from the hills between the Côte de Brouilly and the Côte du Py of Morgon, around the village of Régnié-Durette. • Guy’s grandfather handed down the two parcels that go into this wine: one with 100-year-old and the other with 35-year-old vines. The shallow soil of sand and decomposing stones gives the vines easy access to the bedrock, creating firm wines with more grip and acidity than in Morgon. Guy Breton is known by his friends as Petit Max – though he is anything but petit, by the way. He took over the family domaine from his grandfather in 1986. Until that point, the family was selling their fruit to the large cooperative wineries which dominated the region and were gravitating towards a uniform style. The rise of imported yeast cultures to impart flavor and aroma, the use of high-tech carbonic maceration, and the widespread commercialization of Beaujolais Nouveau debased the region’s reputation, and Beaujolais came to be seen as one-dimensional, lacking any expression of the native terroir. Following the example of traditionalist Jules Chauvet, Guy and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, soon hoisted the flag of this back-to-nature movement. Kermit dubbed this clan the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. The Gang called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. The end result allows Morgon to express itself naturally, without make-up or plastic surgery: rustic, spicy, loaded with schist minerals and at the same time, refreshing and deep-down delicious. Breton’s domaine is comprised of three hectares (only 7.2 acres), eighty percent of which lies in the appellation of Morgon, around the village of Villié-Morgon. The vines range in age from 8 to 80 years, with the 80-year-old vines dedicated to the “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée. Guy’s property is located in the microclimates “Saint-Joseph” and “Grand Cras,” where the naturally low pH of the soil creates favorable conditions for Breton’s sulfur-free vinification.

Chateau Thivin Cote de Brouilly

Chateau-Thivin-Cote-de-Brouilly
The 8.3 hectares of vineyard spread over the east, south and south-west sides yield very individual wines, having a red colour with bluish reflections, and a subtle flavour of violet and peony. In the mouth it distinguishes itself with a lovely balance of silky tannins and wild red fruits such as wild strawberry or bilberry. The finish is long and peppery. This Côte de Brouilly can be charming and lively in its early youth, and can equally become noble and elegant when laid down (three to eight years). At home with fine food, it goes well with entrées such as a traditional chicken liver terrine, meat or poultry such as duck breast, and with goat’s cheese.
