The barley used here is still malted locally at Port Ellen and pure spring water still rises from limestone in nearby Loch Nam Ban, then falls to the sea at Caol Ila in a clear crystal stream, just as it always has.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask Single Malt Whisky offers an irresistible doubling of flavour, due to the double maturation in two barrels made of American oak. Still-maturing whisky from our standard ex-bourbon barrels is transferred to quarter casks and left to rest in our warehouse just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic shore. This process represents Laphroaig breathing new life into a once-defunct tradition: the use of the smaller cask size, which ensures increased contact with the oak, creating a soft and velvety edge to complement Laphroaig’s distinctive peatiness. On the nose the sensation is toffee and caramel, caused by the vanillas and tannins of the American oak, plus a dryness from the wood oil. The finish is long and alternates between this sweetness and smoke.

This expression of our famous whisky, from the remote island of Islay in the Western Isles of Scotland, has enjoyed a triple maturation in 3 types of cask. Just as with our standard Quarter Cask expression, the first maturation is in American oak, ex-Bourbon Barrels. We then select the most suitable of these barrels, containing a range of different aged spirit and transfer into small 19th Century style Quarter Casks for a second maturation. The final maturation is in specially selected, large European oak, Oloroso Sherry Casks. It is bottled at 48% ABV and is non-chill filtered for a depth of taste and texture.

PORT CHARLOTTE SINGLE MALTS, PEATED TO A HEAVYWEIGHT 40PPM, REPRESENT OUR ONGOING EXPLORATION INTO THE PEAT FIRED LEGACY OF A GREAT DISTILLERY, NOW SILENT. Two miles south of Bruichladdich, hugging the shore of Loch Indaal, lies the village of Port Charlotte and ruins of Lochindaal Distillery, that ran spirit for 100 years between 1829 and 1929. Following his visit here in 1885 Alfred Barnard wrote: "Peat only is used in drying the malt, fired in open chauffeurs", a testament supported in a few surviving faded photographs showing the huge peat stacks waiting to be fed to the kiln fires. Our heavily peated Port Charlotte single malts are a tribute to the men who once worked this great, now silent, distillery and the skills and legacy they passed on. Trickle distilled in our cathedral-like still house at Bruichladdich, the spirit is then matured in the original old stone warehouses in Port Charlotte. Living proof that peat can mean elegance.

This spirit was distilled in December 2005 using malt peated to a colossal 167ppm. Filled into Fresh Bourbon and Grenache Blanc casks, it spent the next decade slumbering in P2, the ancient stone warehouse in the village of Port Charlotte, close to the western shore of Loch Indaal. In this second edition of ten year old, the unique texture of Octomore is lifted further by the smooth, sweet fruit of Grenache and engages perfectly with the phenolic depth. Just 18,000 bottles exist, presented at 57.3% alc.vol. with a splash of Islay spring water. 18,000 individually numbered bottles only. NOSE The Octomore DNA is evident as soon as the cork is popped. The smoke is closely intertwined with the rich and fruity toasted oak of the Grenache casks. Wisps of smoky iodine, leather, polish, Nutella, ginger syrup, walnuts and orange peels compete for your attention before allowing the fruit to come into its own as lemon and green apples are held together in the grip of the typical Octomore smoky, salty rope, marine character. PALATE The heat from the natural strength is tempered by the wonderful texture in this whisky, not only has 10 years of maturation in fabulous American Bourbon and French Grenache casks allowed the phenol level to calm it has allowed the viscous, oil rich body of the whisky to build a strong confident character. The balance of smoke, oak and fruit is different from other Octomores, as the phenols naturally fade with age the fabulous casks develop a strong hold on the spirit, salted caramel, marzipan vanilla and crusty malty bread. FINISH Given time eventually the power will fade, though after a couple of sips you may be forgiven for thinking your palate is altered forever as the smoke ligers for fully an hour! As ever the dry peat smoke will be the last flavour to remain reminiscent of pipe tobacco ash and peat tea, an island delicacy of tea brewed over a peat fire while gathering peats on the moss. this whisky is scarce, if you are lucky enough to taste it, treasure it. MOOD This dram is bright and honest and has depth and backbone. Watching this spirit is develop is a privilege as there is a feeling with Octomore that there will always be a secret to revealed.

This has given a lot of influence to the flavour of the whisky, and make this one for lovers of big sherry flavours. It is therefore not for everyone, expect some sticky, chocolate, toffee and caramel flavours along with some roasted nuts, dried fruits and the typical Bowmore smoke. This goes really well with a few squares of good quality dark chocolate.

Inspired by the rolling hills and green forests in the estate of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensferry, Douglas of Drumlanrig is a collection of single cask bottlings from independent bottlers, Hunter Laing, that have been personally endorsed and approved by the Duke himself. Bearing the image of the Douglas family seat - Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway - these selected malts are generally between 10 and 20 years of age. This Douglas of Drumlanrig Dailuaine 12 year old from the Speyside distillery of the same name, was distilled in October 2001 and bottled in April 2014 from Sherry Butt cask 10333. It is one of only 360 bottles.
