The Barnouin family began as pepinierists, or vine clone experts. So when they founded Domaine de Gournier, they were a step... or three... ahead of other wine estates in the Costieres de Nimes area of France. They knew not only which varieties to plant, but exactly where to plant them in order to ensure the grapes attained full ripeness each year.Today, Domaine de Gournier is owned by Maurice Barnouin. On the western edge of the Rhone Valley, north of the city of Nimes, the area’s geography presents a combination of low limestone hills, studded with outcroppings of calcareous rock, and sparse vegetation. In other words, ideal conditions for growing winegrapes. In making the 2012 Domaine de Gournier Rosé, Barnouin used five varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre — a marriage of Bordeaux and Rhone. And what a union it is, creating a wine that is dry, robust and refreshing.
