Named after the 800 year-old olive tree standing amongst the Tempranillo and Graciano vines, this is a beautiful wine, perhaps the quintessential "modern Rioja." Incidentally, it just might be the one more modern Rioja that even traditionalists tend to rally behind, a wine that is big and intensely flavored, oaky yet with so much obvious material that you cannot deny its greatness and ageability. Think of this as somewhere between a delicious southern Rhone wine and Rioja, with purple, blue and red fruit, sweet baking spices and minerality. Try this and see why Contino's Viña del Olivo is a favorite of many Spaniards and a must have on any serious wine list in Spain. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)
Great aromas of fruit with an elegant complexity and a grear richness of tannins, highlighting the spicy hints in perfect balance with the fruity nuances. Touches of red fruit and balsamic notes like anise, mint or licorice. Great structure, rounded, with tannins of mature fruit and high quality barrels. It is a well balanced wine, powerful in mouth, complex and with good prospects of becoming a Great Wine.
