Marsala is a fortified wine made by blending three different types of grapes that grow natively in Sicily: Grillo, Inzolia and Catarratto. The grapes are mixed during fermentation, which is halted by the addition of high-proof spirits. This "base wine" is called ”Mistella”, which in Colombo's case is then aged for 8 months in barrel followed by 4 months in bottle before release.
