Little James is the Saint Cosme wine with which you can familarise yourself with Grenache. It is a celebration of the Grenache grape variety and its almost limitless potential. Our Solera is 20 years old this year: admittedly, this means that we are not getting any younger but it provides an idea of how far we have come. Every year we try and move forward by adding new elements, new ideas, different complexities. In fact, the freshness in our southern Grenache is unnerving: why is it not found in Grenache grown in other warm regions where it can become heavy and overripe? What aspect of our climate makes a difference? The Mistral, perhaps, or the cooling influence of the Alps, or air quality? This will remain a mystery. Whatever the truth, there is no Grenache like this in the ‘ampelography’ world - it can take on a thousand and one faces and always has surprises in store. The whole purpose of a solera is to be always the same, and yet always different... In the 2020 bottlings, the intense influence of 2019 is perceptible, rounded out by the mature vintages that tone down the narrative and impart a little more refinement.
