Banfi’s San Angelo Pinot Grigio has been a huge albeit unlikely success, for Tuscany wouldn’t be considered the optimum location to plant this grape variety, which typically thrives in cooler climates. This vintage was warm and the grapes ripened early, but the results were excellent. On the palate the wine exhibits intense aromas of pear and citrus, with mouth-watering acidity and mouth-filling richness. It may pale next to some of the exceptional Pinot Grigio produced to the north in Alto Adige and Friuli, but that’s hardly an indictment. It’s fresh, crisp and delicious, an outstanding accompaniment with savory antipasti.
