Wine in Stags Leap District

Napa's neighborhood for world-class reds, the Stags Leap District attracts some of the best in California including: Chimney Rock, Shafer, Quixote, and Clos du Val. Vineyards here date back to the mid-1800s when the Silverado Trail was just a quiet horse path. Cabernet Sauvignon became Napa's star during the 1976 Judgment of Paris, when Stags Leap took first place over the French First Growth Bordeaux's Mouton-Rothschild and Haut Brion. The staggering impact of the "win" was reinforced ten years later when the same wines were tasted a second time. The winner was a Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, 1972 Clos Du Val. As Karen MacNeil says "when you taste a typical Stags Leap District wine, you understand what all the fuss is about." These reds are all about textural hedonism, softness and intensity.

Always the most accessible of our Napa Cabernets. Defined by its subtlety, this bottling offers bright red fruits, graceful mouthfeel, and soft, sinewy tannins.

Powerful and complex, this deep garnet wine offers alluring aromas of ripe black cherry, red raspberry and rich dark plum that mingle with layers of cocoa powder.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was grown from four of our best blocks of the Hirondelle Estate Vineyard. The wine has deep blackcurrant aromas with a hint of clove. Displaying flavors of blueberry, toast, espresso and fresh cream, there is a long, velvety finish. The growing season started two to three weeks early and progressed perfectly through the ripening process. The lack of rain during flowering this year resulted in a plentiful crop and instead of keeping very warm temperatures through the summer, we had cooling patterns throughout the season that lengthened the harvest out. The longer the growing season yielded high quality grapes.

This wine comes from the Stags Leap District, universally hailed as the best Cabernet Sauvignon location in California. The unique soil and climate here allow Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignons to rival the great Grand Crus of Bordeaux. This wine exhibits aromas of cassis, cocoa, blueberry with hints of vanilla. With rich berry flavors and firm tannins, it has a long finish with great balance. Enjoyable while young, it will reward those with the patience to cellar it for a few years.

The 2014 Malk Family Pinot Noir expresses a wide-array of wonderful aromatics from classic bergamot and Earl Grey tea qualities to ripe black cherry and licorice as well as accents of wild mint and forest floor and even a touch of spice. This Pinot Noir has an incredibly elegant presence on the palate, but maintains a significant weight and density. It is enjoyable now, but will continue to develop nicely for a decade.

The glass comes alive with aromas of crushed red and black summer berries, rose petal and herbs. In the mouth the generous, lush black and red fruits integrate enticingly with sage, tobacco leaf, smoke and black spice all wrapped within a structure of ripe Stags Leap District tannins. The finish is long and pleasurable.

Chimney Rock 09 Cabernet is supple and harmonious; offering ripe black plum, wild berry and cedar notes, complex spices and touches of black licorice, nutmeg and sweet oak on the finish.
