Here we search for the expression of the fresh and kind fruit of the grape that proceeds from a strict selection of vineyards between 15 and 30 years. The elaboration pretends to extract the maximum aromatic potential of the grape while preserving a balanced and mild wine to be enjoyed in any occasion. For that we employ a modern technique known as “cold soaking”, which we have been improving constantly until achieving maximum benefits: A good extraction of color and aroma with a low input of tannins.

It is made with the best grapes in Pago Valdelayegua, a vineyard that contributes unique qualities to the wine. At an average height of 815 meters above sea level, it produces grapes of great color and structure, thanks to a high proportion of clay-limestone soil, the result of the sedimentation of particles that the river Gromejón carried in suspension millions of years ago.

In 2002, both third generation grape growers in DO Ribera del Duero, long-time friends turned brother in laws, Miguel Hornillos and Javier Ballesteros, decided to blend their knowledge, curiosity and passion for their vineyard work into a new generation of winemaking tradition for their families. Since then, the brothers have become faithful students of their parcels and strive for a more complete understanding of their combined 40 hectares in the surrounding areas of Roa in Burgos. We are talking vineyards so attractive that the majority of their precious grape production gets sold at top dollar to some of the region’s most prominent wineries like Pago de los Cappellanes and Alion. And each year following a meticulous squirreling of only 10-15 % of their harvest, they hand craft wines on the side of the road in a humble little winery that houses their vision: MiBal. This soulful project of Miguel and Javier has a natural respect for their beautifully maintained, hardly touched vineyards by producing ecologically farmed wines, following biodynamic philosophies and practices with a minimalistic intervention approach to their winemaking. The result is incredibly fresh wines with bright acidity and a purity of concentrated dark fruit wet earth and savory textures. Their elegance and balance are expressive of higher altitudes (2700 ft above sea level) and the complex blending of the terroirs of clay, sand and gravel. They incorporate the use of used American and French oak barrels to age their Crianza, and the Joven is juicy and oak free. HISTORY This wine, bearing the name of its creator, is the alma mater of the winery. Since the 1998 harvest the winery reffers to this wine which is made from middle-age vineyards, althought Emilio Moro was previously used for crianzas and reservas. WINEMAKING PROCESS Produced from grapes from middle-age vineyards. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with subsequent ageing in French and American oak barrels. TASTING NOTES Elegant and subtle with a low production volume which has brought out the best essences of the grape. It’s a powerful and balanced wine with exceptional elegance. The aromas of Tempranillo have been refined through the ageing process and it has notes of wood in the background and the personality of the variety. In the palate, it is a reflection of the nose: strong and powerful with mellow and refined tannins.

Viña Almate is the name of the first vineyard that Alfredo planted and gives the name to his bodega and to Alfredo’s entry-level Duero wine. This cuvee is made from fruit sourced from various plots of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), of varying vine ages located, in Valtiendas at 1,000 meters elevation, as well as Peñafiel, at 700 meters. The wine is 80% whole cluster fermented in steel vat with 15-20 days of maceration, and raised for 4 months in neutral French oak with one racking: unfined, unfiltered, and very low SO2. The result is a very pure and classic medium to full bodied Duero wine with notes of red fruits, spice, flowers, and minerals; a great wine to pair with grilled and roasted meats.

Elegant, with ripe red and black fruit and a fresh and original touch, which together with sweet spices and fine toasts, make it a very expressive wine with great personality.

From the vineyards placed higher with sand soils with clay and limestone contents we elaborate Monteabellón Crianza 14 meses en barrica. This soil provides us with propitious grapes to obtain a wine with a perfect structure.
