Established in 1877, Durant & Booth was originally a popular grocery store located at the Oakville crossroads, which is the gateway for Napa wine country. Harvested in the cool morning hours from vines in Calistoga, St. Helena and Rutherford, the grapes were handsorted, macerated, then aged for 20 months in 30% new French oak. Red fruit aromas of strawberry and cherry lead to raspberry and blueberry flavors mingling with dark chocolate and spices. This is a structured and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with great depth. The wine is textured and has a long-lasting finish. Made of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot.

In 1877 the Oakville Winery became the 9th bonded winery in California, and today, this same winery is the home of our Napa Wine Company, where our family makes all of our organically-grown wines. We are proud to be the only single-digit bonded winery still in existence in California, and our Oakville Winery wines pay homage to this history and heritage. Under the direction of Winemaker Lynn Watanabe, the impeccably-made Oakville Winery Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are sourced primarily from our Pelissa Vineyard directly behind our winery in the heart of the acclaimed Oakville AVA. This unique Oakville Zinfandel has developed a powerful structure that is sweet on the front palate and spicy on the back. On the nose; ripe blackberry, wild huckleberries, and candied raspberry. On the palate, this Zinfandel is medium bodied with soft, fine tannins. It is supple, well-balanced and is bursting with ripe dark fruits and black pepper.

With great concentration and beautiful balance, the Schrader RBS shows wonderful energy and freshness on the palate. Inviting aromas of crushed blackberry and plum compote are complemented by a touch of spring flowers. Flavors of graphite and blue and black fruits dance along the palate with the integration of wood, tannin, and acidity being seamless. Ever approachable in its youth the Schrader RBS is a perennial favorite of our team.

Far Niente Winery is located in Oakville, an area famous for Napa Valley Cabernet, and home to our estate Martin Stelling Vineyard from which we’ve been producing our Cabernets since 1982. The abundant 2012 vintage is approachable, even in its youth, with bold, ripe, fruit and mouth-filling tannins typical of the Far Niente house style. After several cool and challenging growing seasons, the weather in 2012 was nearly perfect. March brought heavy spring rains, sustaining the vines through the season. Temperatures were ideal for budbreak, flowering and fruit set, and the summer months brought warm days and cool nights without extreme weather events. These conditions allowed the vines to establish a large, but balanced crop, which steadily ripened until our Cabernet harvest began in early October. Mother Nature held back on her fall rains, enabling us to bring in each block at optimal ripeness before the end of the month. The 2012 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of mixed berry fruit, boysenberry, chocolate covered cherries, layered with hints of graphite and toasted oak. On the palate, a smooth entry is followed by intense, ripe berry notes. This wine is focused and silky through the midpalate, building to a finish with broad tannins and notes of cedar and toasted oak.

The tasting of this wine is interesting. With no added acid, fining or filtration and also finishing at lower alcohol, this wine is as close to the grape as possible. Rich and powerful à la Oakville we don’t get the “fake sweetness” as we do when the wine is 15% or over. The natural acid means the wine is also in better balance. So this is a wine that is set for ageing. In 10 years this wine will be at its finest but unfortunately most of it will be drunk well in advance of that. Classic aromas of cassis and blueberry fruit mingle with dark chocolate and mocha notes. Full spice and balanced wood. Gives way to a long and supple very balanced wine.
