Azul Y Garanza Navarra

Azul-Y-Garanza-Navarra
The 2012 Fiesta is a blend of organically grown Tempranillo (60 percent) and Garnacha dry-farmed in arid clay-limestone soils. To maximize freshness, the wine was aged in concrete tanks (no oak used) before being bottled without filtration. “Fiesta by name, fiesta by nature”: As the winery says. This easy-to-love charmer bursts with vibrant red fruit aromas and flavors. While notes of ripe raspberry, cherry and plum put out a casual aura of barely restrained frivolity, compelling nuances of underbrush, lightly smoked game and white pepper add depth and intrigue.

Aromas of wet rock, chewing gum and mild citrus fruits are straight down the middle. This feels modest, while cottony flavors of citrus and watermelon finish short and easy.

The vinification begins with the pre-fermentative maceration at cold temperatures and juice is extracted by gravity. Once the skins are separated, the must begins alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks, with a daily control of temperature, density and sensorial analysis. Then it begins its malolactic fermentation being stored in concrete tanks. Pink redcurrant colour, clean and shiny. Medium-high intensity in the nose. Notes of fresh red fruits and sharp Strawberry. Rich, long and with a great acidity. Fruity aftertaste.

VINTAGE Very different than the uber-dry 2012 vintage, 2013 was marked by high precipitation, with rainfall records doubling that which is normally found in Navarra. The wet spring months caused a delay in the start of the vegetative cycle and that, along with an atypical bud break, delayed harvest until the second week of October. Only by performing extremely careful viticulture management were the Artadi team confident they would be able to maintain the outstanding quality of their Navarran wines. A vintage that put the best viticulturalists ‘to the test,’ the 2013 wines produced by the López de Lacalle family in Navarra are shining examples of what careful vineyard management and grape selection can produce in a challenging vintage. VINEYARDS Located at an altitude of 1,650 feet, Bodegas Artazu's vineyards are subject to the extreme influences of an Atlantic and Continental climate. Much unlike the Garnacha that is produced in other regions of Spain, or even other parts of Navarra, the vines of Bodegas Artazu are located in quaternary alluvial soils with a very chalky subsoil. The new 5- to 15-year-old plantings are trellised, never irrigated and grown without the use of chemical pesticides or herbicides. The ancient 70- to 90-year-old vines are head-pruned, produce a very low yield of less than 2 pounds per vine, or around ¼ ton per acre, and are also organically farmed. A green harvest is performed each year and fruit is dropped when needed. WINEMAKERS NOTES In the early 1990s, after visiting several different villages in the D.O. Navarra, owner and winemaker Juan Carlos López de Lacalle came upon the town of Artazu where he was captivated by the vineyards, landscape and especially the people. Historically, the cultivation of vines had been the economic engine of the village and historical documents gave evidence to several awards won by the townspeople for producing high quality Garnacha wines. Juan Carlos aspired to defend this winemaking tradition and approached this new project, his second winery in Spain, with great enthusiasm. By purchasing the few remaining ancient vineyard blocks around Artazu and by planting new vineyards with cuttings from the old vines, Juan Carlos ensured he had the raw material with which to make outstanding wines from Navarra. Since, traditionally, Rosé wines were the most famous and acclaimed wines produced in the region, the Artazuri Rosado is a tribute to Artazu’s winemaking history. Translucent pink in color with an alluring nose that contains nuances of fresh strawberries, raspberries rose petals and orange rind. The palate is bright and fruity with a fresh acidity, which makes the 2013 Artazuri Rosado delicious on its own or the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of meat, fish and cheese-based dishes. VARIETY 100% Garnacha

Ah-So-Rosé
Ah-So is produced at the Lopez de LaCalle Artazu property in Navarra Spain. The winery was established in 1996. Juan Carlos Lopez de LaCalle of famed Bodegas Artadi was searching for the perfect terroir and vineyards with pioneering vintner Randall Graham of Bonny Doon. They found old deprived Garnacha vines buried in the hillside town of Artazu. Located about 30km from the city of Pamplona which is know for the festival of San Fermin, aka ’Running of the Bulls”. Valdizarbe is the most northerly region flanked by the Pyrenees Mountain range and the Atlantic ocean. The hillsides of Navarra are the perfect location to produce world class Garnacha. The micro-climate in the town of Artazu is cool at night and warm during the day. The combination of warm days and cool night provides the perfect environment for Garnacha to reach full maturation while maintaining freshness and acidity. Juan Carlos was captivated by the old gnarled vines of Garnacha and landscape. The family decided to purchase the few remaining ancient vineyards blocks around the town of Artazu and plant new vineyards. From these vineyards the family founded Bodegas y Vinedos Artazu.
