Wine in Colchagua Valley

In the mid-nineteenth century, two of the leading Chilean wine producers brought vines from Bordeaux to improve the quality of the original vineyard of Vina Los Vascos. Chile's natural geographic frontiers protected it from the Phyloxera epidemic of the late nineteenth century and resulted in an unbroken line of wine stock that now produces some of the finest wines in all of Chile. The acquisition of 50% of Los Vascos by Rothschild (Lafite) in 1988 was the result of an exhaustive search of more than one hundred Chilean wines for one that could meet their criteria for excellence. Christian Le Sommer, ex-technical director for Chteau Latour 1st Growth in Pauillac, is now in charge of the technical management of Los Vascos.

Saved from extinction, Chile’s revival of the Carmenere is something to celebrate. This wine comes to your glass from a 19th century family-run vineyard in Colchagua Valley. Its violet hue and blow-your-mind nose of plum and spice is nothing compared to its deliciously afternoonifed taste.

Dark garnet in color, this Carmenere has aromas of black plum, rich soil, toasted vanilla, and licorice. Fruity with dried raspberry, tar, roasted cherry, white pepper, black licorice, and a moderate oakiness. The tannins are soft and silky with a warming medium-length finish.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced primarily from Montes' Finca Apalta Estate vineyard with some additions from their Marchigüe Estate vineyard. A ruby red, deep-colored wine. On the nose its an elegant, complex and intense wine with violets and red fruits evocations of blackberry, chocolate, black pepper and cigar box aromas while its affinity with oak lends vanilla and coffee notes, producing a wine in perfect balance of real finesse and class, a really outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.

This great limited edition wine presents an intense and dark ruby-red color. The nose is intensely fresh and fruity with notes of ripe tart fruits such as plums and cherries along with spicy notes that lend complexity. The palate presents tremendous structure accompanied by fresh natural acidity that lends balance and silkiness without losing the personality of its origins.

Dark ruby color, fresh in flavor with a vivid array of black currant, blackberry, violet, black tea, and black pepper aromas that zoom through to a long, expressive finish. Tannins are present but nicely contained.

Deep ruby-red with an eye-catching, violet hue. On the nose it’s complex and elegant. Pronounced, delicious aromas of ripe red and black fruit melt into inviting chocolate, mocha and brioche. The nose is well-balanced, with a little spice in the background. The French oak lends some toasted notes that complement the aromatic pro le, while adding a slight sensation of sweetness. On the palate, it shows itself to be a wine of great Carmenère character and typicity, with rich acidity that is well balanced with the generous body. The tannins are velvety and give way to a long memorable finish.

Beautiful and delicate ruby-red color. Intense and elegant nose, with predominance of strawberry and flowery notes, that together make this Pinot Noir a very lively, harmonious and generous wine. On the palate it is clean, well balanced, with soft rounded tannins and a good level of acidity. The wine is long in the mouth and shows well-integrated, balanced oak. The wine is very lightly filtered, making the aromas and color very expressive of Pinot Noir.

Fresh aromas of citrus fruits, figs and freshly cut grass. On the palate, the wine shows fruity, lime flavors with subtle herbaceaous notes and hints of figs. Its crispness is complemented with an element of creaminess and a lingering finish provided by the Chardonnay and Viognier.

Ruby-red in colour, with violet at the rim. The nose is generous; red and black fruit aromas are perfectly balanced with smooth notes of spice. Aromas are strawberry, cassis, nutmeg and cinnamon, with vanilla, and mocha from the wine’s time in French oak, which also lends a sensation of sweetness on the midpalate. In the mouth it’s balanced, with smooth tannins and rich, fresh acidity that makes the wine juicy. The finish has medium fruit in line with the aromas perceived on the nose. Great with meat dishes.

The grapes were picked by hand and aged in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for 12 months. The wine shows a purple-red color with bluish shadings. Highly complex on the nose, it stands out for its ripe black fruits, spicy notes and soft touches of bitter chocolate. It feels concentrated on the palate, with sweet and round tannins, a balanced acidity tension and a touch of chocolate in its ending, which comes from its aging process in French oak barrels. This wine is especially pleasant when paired with ribs or mushroom risotto.

This Pinot Noir is ruby red in colour with aromas of fresh red berries and a touch of earth and spice. Rich, ripe, red fruit flavours on the palate are balanced by the earthy notes that lead to a smooth, silky texture.

This Colchagua Valley wine has received good scores from various critics: the 2011 vintage was given a score of 90 by Wine Spectator. Ranked second among the wines from this region with respect to number of prizes won: the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles awarded the 2012 vintage Gold and the 2007 vintage Gold. Among the highest-priced wines from Colchagua Valley. The price has been stable over the past year.
