Wine in Colchagua Valley

In the mid-nineteenth century, two of the leading Chilean wine producers brought vines from Bordeaux to improve the quality of the original vineyard of Vina Los Vascos. Chile's natural geographic frontiers protected it from the Phyloxera epidemic of the late nineteenth century and resulted in an unbroken line of wine stock that now produces some of the finest wines in all of Chile. The acquisition of 50% of Los Vascos by Rothschild (Lafite) in 1988 was the result of an exhaustive search of more than one hundred Chilean wines for one that could meet their criteria for excellence. Christian Le Sommer, ex-technical director for Chteau Latour 1st Growth in Pauillac, is now in charge of the technical management of Los Vascos.

Saved from extinction, Chile’s revival of the Carmenere is something to celebrate. This wine comes to your glass from a 19th century family-run vineyard in Colchagua Valley. Its violet hue and blow-your-mind nose of plum and spice is nothing compared to its deliciously afternoonifed taste.

The Maquis Cabernet Franc is grown in the Colchagua Valley. The wine is made from grapes grown on the Maquis estate, between the Chimbarongo Creek and the Tinguiririca River in central Colchagua Valley. These elements are ideal for producing Cabernet Franc grapes that are full and rich, yet display balance and elegance.

“La Chevalière,” or “the knight’s lady,” is a reference to “Mas La Chevalière” which is literally the “farmhouse of the knight’s lady,” the Laroche winery in southern France where this wine is produced.

ANTU, means “Sun” in the Mapuche native language, and this is the new exploratory range of wines at MontGras, where the identity and characteristics of the terroir transfers to each bottle. This wine is an intense purple-red color. The nose reveals ripe black fruits, combined with some smoky notes from the ageing. In the mouth, it is also rich in flavors, with round and soft tannins. The good volume is perfectly balanced with the fruit and complexity from the ageing, and the finish is long and pleasant.

Bright ruby-red in color with intense and expressive aromas of strawberries, blueberries, and a bit of black pepper. After several years of experimentation, Aurelio Montes settled on producing a rosé from Syrah (the grape he made famous in Chile with the country´s first Ultra Premium Syrah, Montes Folly). Montes Cherub is a seductive, elegant, dry wine, with an intense cherry-pink color. Expressive of the grape and its terroir, it shows distinct Syrah character: spiciness and hints of strawberry, rose and orange peel. There is a strong backbone of acidity with residual tannins that gives the wine structure. For a rosé, it shows good fruit concentration and a richness in texture across the palate that leads to a delightfully long finish.

This wine is produced from sustainably farmed grapes from the Colchagua region. It is aged in neutral oak for 8 months. Aromas of ripe black fruit, leather and vanilla are complemented with cassis flavors and hints of spice, with a long velvety finish. Ideal with lamb shank and beef empanada.
