Wine in Barossa

This is the second release of Greenock one. Shiraz is the number one variety in the Barossa. No one can argue the importance of this variety and the place it has reached in many hearts of fine wine connoisseurs around the world. Whilst the wine is proudly from the Barossa Valley, we also want to take our friends on a journey to show that the Barossa has as much sub regional diversity as any of the great wine regions of the world. Our vineyard, located in Greenock in the west of the Barossa Valley was added to the Elderton family in 2010 and is a great addition to the portfolio. The 60 acre vineyard has plantings back to 1915 and a terroir that has been in demand by many of the Barossa’s elite winemakers. This wine is from vines ranging 20 – 35 years of age. Yields are extraordinarily low due to the toughness and free draining nature of the soils, the lack of rain and also the fact that the last owners almost succeeded in running the vineyard into the ground. In many blocks we still struggle to get more than one tonne an acre.

Barossa Valley Estate wines are a contemporary expression of the wines that made the Barossa Valley great. They capture the distinctive elegance, finesse and vibrant fruit flavors of one of the world's most celebrated wine regions. Barossa Valley Estate Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre is a beautiful combination of these three majestic grape varieties perfected in a true Barossa Valley style. Fragrant violet with a burst of red berryfruits lingering softly on a velvety texture. Its name is an exquisite mouthful – and so is this wine. Ideal as an apertif or perfectly matched with steak, lamb and charcuterie, spicy, smoky and barbeque flavors, bernaise and peppercorn sauces, and aged cheeses.

GRAND BAROSSA Riesling is subtle yellow in color, displaying delicate lifted aromas of lime blossom and citrus fruits. Lemon, lime and hints of passion fruit are in abundance. The palate is focused, pure and linear with a delicious juicy finish. Elegant and intense with a touch of minerality and refreshing acidity.

Rubus is a private label created and used by Kysela Pere et Fils, LTD. Only a couple of critics have rated this Barossa wine so far: Wine Spectator gave the 2012 vintage a score of 90. More affordable than the typical red wine from Barossa. Many stores in America have this wine. Merchants are listing three vintages between 2010 and 2013.

Peter Lehmann Portrait Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from all corners of the Barossa Valley, taking full advantage of the variety’s multiple characteristics. Vineyards from the north, which are higher and enjoy cooling gully winds, capture the perfumed varietal character, while the southern vineyards are richer, and create the backbone of this complex and rewarding wine.

Bold and seductive, this youthful, unoaked blend encapsulates all that is great in natural, pure, unseasoned wine. Its fragrance, intensity and energy are all reminiscent of freshly fermenting must, with ripe juicy flavors of blackberry, spiced cherries, minerals and Asian spices wrapped around a skeleton of fresh acidity and fine mineral laden tannins. Soft and sensuous, this wine is frightfully drinkable already, but as with its predecessors will greatly recompense those who choose to give it a few years in the cellar.

Minimal filtration preserves the elegance of these fruit flavours and the wine is barrel fermented to increase complexity of aromas. After primary fermentation the chardonnay is matured in French oak barriques for around seven to nine months. The wine is regularly stirred on lees to further enhance palate texture and flavours. Malolactic fermentation is also employed to encourage creaminess and weight. While the Thomas Hyland Chardonnay is a modestly priced wine in Penfolds’ portfolio, it can include fruit relegated from Penfolds’ top white wine, Yattarna.

With an average age of 15 years these Baby Bush vines take the pedigree of the world’s oldest Mourvèdre vineyard yet are imbued with the vibrancy and bold confidence of youth. Baby Bush is a wine of natural beauty that is unique in its heritage and history.

Orphan Bank is testament to Langmeil’s commitment to preserving old and rare Barossa vineyards. Ten rows of Shiraz planted pre-1860 were saved from the developer’s bulldozer and replanted alongside the original Langmeil vineyard on the banks of the River Para. We called these ten rows the “Orphans” but after 150 years they have a new home.

Deep red/black color with a rich bouquet of chocolate and black forest fruits. This is a full bodied wine with soft, velvet tannins and a long finish.

Strong primary core with garnet rim. On the nose, it’s a very earthy Cabernet with olive leaf, cedar spice and layered with red stone fruit, Satsuma plums and blueberry. Soft elegant palate, very drinkable even in its youth, partly due to good balance of flavours between the fruit characters and savoury notes from the oak. This wine is a good medium term cellaring wine, 8-10 years

“The Barossa Valley Shiraz is generous in its dark plum and blackberry fruits. Notes of tar and graphite follow with hints of dried herbs and tobacco. The palate is rounded and supple with dark fruits and a supple tannin backbone which brings with it coffee ground and cedar flavours. The wine finishes with generous dark fruits and white pepper spice.”
