While Red Mountain is known for big, powerful red wine, it’s also an exceedingly good place to grow white varietals. The Kiona Estate vineyard has 4 acres of Chenin Blanc planted in a depression, ensuring a consistent freeze year-in, year-out. We don’t pick Ice Wine until the grapes are naturally frozen in the vineyard (at least 17 ̊F for 8 hours). Ice Wine is one of the world’s most elusive and delicious elixirs. We prefer to use Chenin Blanc, a varietal that allows for robust acidity and intense green and tropical fruit avors. Our philosophy with this wine is to emphasize acidity over outright sweetness, a tactic that ensures we produce a balanced, crisp wine that dances on the tongue.
This Sauvignon Blanc is immensely drinkable and high on the “yum” factor. The wine is unmistakably identifiable as Sauvignon Blanc, with bright, high-tone fruit characteristic buoyed by subtle pyrazine notes of fresh grass and herb. It’s also clearly a Columbia Valley wine, with great acid, balance, and food-pairability. Our 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is equally at home by itself as a stand-alone sipper, or paired with fresh Pacific Northwest seafood.
This consistent award-winner is a signature wine for Kiona. Lemberger is a relatively obscure Eastern European grape that is sometimes known as Blaufränkisch. The vine grows exceedingly well on Red Mountain, where we have established the go-to vineyard in Washington for the varietal. We use our premium fruit and extensive experience with the wine to craft an immensely versatile and universally appealing medium-bodied wine with plenty of style.
Lemberger was planted here in the 1970s, and Kiona still carries the torch for the grape. Earthy, gamy, soft and smooth, it has a quickly maturing flavor set, built upon chocolate and cherries, with dusty tannins.90 Points Wine Enthusiast
