Hiram Walker Rock and Rye 3/4 Quart Vintage bottle still sealed but tax seal starting to peel off due to age see pictures. Rock and rye is an American classic. Rye whiskey, sweetened with rock candy and flavored with pieces of fruit and sometimes horehound, was among the remedies used to treat colds in the early part of the 20th century. In days gone by, every bar had its own creation of rock and rye. During the late 1800's several rock candy companies existed, including one formed in 1880 by Charles Dryden and Noah Palmer. Prohibition was not kind to the rock candy industry, and only the Dryden & Palmer Company remains today. Unfortunately, their rock candy is not used to sweeten today’s commercially bottled Rock & Rye.
