The American Trilogy is the rarest of cocktail constructions: a riff on an Old Fashioned that stands the test of time. Invented at the famous cocktail haven Little Branch in New York City, this riff combines whiskey with apple brandy, making it the perfect fit for when a chill is in the air.
For our take, we blend barrel strength rye whiskey and apple brandy with Demerara sugar, aromatic bitters, and locally-made Embitterment orange bitters. Once we have our blend, we rest it in ex-rye whiskey barrels to mellow. Finally, we bottle it just above cocktail strength. That way all you need to do is add ice, give it a shake or stir, and express an orange peel over it.
On the nose you're greeted with warm whiskey and fresh notes of apple peel.
The sip is a top notch Old Fashioned with layers of unexpected intricacy. Apple notes peak through alternating layers of citrus and baking spice from the aromatic bitters. A hint of Demerara sugar ties the experience together and begs another taste.
