Canadian whiskies know how to get it done. Here is a genre of booze where many of the main players are inexpensive and decent: Black Velvet, Canadian Club, Canadian Mist, Seagram’s 7. Hats off to you Canadian whisky brands and the massive corporate conglomerates who own you. Seagram’s 7 Crown isn’t actually an official “Canadian” whisky (more on that in a moment), but it tastes like one: sweet, spicy, and reasonably smooth. It’s good stuff, but Seagram’s 7 isn’t my favorite in this category. I prefer Canadian Club. Compared with Canadian Club, all the flavors in Seagram’s are flatter and not as good-tasting—though, in keeping with this generalization, the sweetness of Seagram’s 7 is also less intense, and this is a good thing. Seagram’s 7 is also cheaper: a handle is about $16. The fifth isn’t as impressive at $13.
