Based on recipes dating back to the 1800's, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao Ancienne Methode is a recreation of the dry, complex orange liqueur used by bartending pioneers of the 19th century. Developed by Pierre Ferrand proprietor Alexandre Gabriel and cocktail historian David Wondrich, this liqueur is created by macerating bitter Curacao orange peels, vanilla, prunes, lemon peels and sweet oranges, along with over a dozen other ingredients, in unaged brandy. This is then re-distilled and blended with aged brandy and Pierre Ferrand Cognac, before finally being matured in oak casks. The result is a complex, bittersweet liqueur brimming with natural orange flavor, perfectly balanced by hints of vanilla, spice, herbs and a subtle floral note. Pierre Ferrand Renegade Barrel No. 2 is aged in a combination of oak and chestnut barrels. The practice of aging in chestnut barrels has been forgotten since 1945 and as a result, it was not included in subsequent Cognac AOC regulations. Therefore, this is designated as an eau de vie and not a cognac. However, it is made entirely from grapes from the Grande Champagne region. It is bottled at 47.1% ABV. Limited availability.
A deep mahogany color. The nose opens on scents of jasmine tea, honeysuckle and walnut, followed by oaky vanilla, chocolate and a hint of curry. The bouquet expands on notes of candied fruit, saffron spices, ginger and honey mingled with nutmeg and cedarwood. Pierre Ferrand Sélection des Anges offers concentrated flavor leading into a very long finish. Gold Medal with 95/100 – Beverage Testing Institute (2009)
