When Josh told us he and Ellen were playing around with fermenting tepache at home and might want to incorporate some of the ingredients in for a Horse & Dragon lager, we were intrigued. A little discussion and research revealed that this traditional Mexican fermented fruit beverage is now made with pineapple, ginger, cinnamon, and chiles. Thinking that that many strong flavors might overwhelm the great lager base he had planned, Josh decided to limit the recipe additions to pineapple and ginger. We can’t think of a more refreshing summer drink. Ginger on the nose combines with floral and tropical hop notes. Sipping the beer you could just enjoy a light and eminently refreshing summer beer, or you could try to analyze the different stages of grain – no ginger – no pineapple – no hops -- on your tongue. Like a beautiful tropical umbrella drink, only better, because: beer! ABV: 5.1%
At first sniff, fruit forward hop aroma wafts off of this refreshing golden lager. Those delicate citrusy notes continue through to the first sip, joined by light malt sweetness and increased mouthfeel lent by flaked corn, present in the malt bill, and Mexican lager yeast, used for fermentation. A slight resiny hop bitterness lingers to round out this crisp, drinkable beer. Perfect for enjoying cold on the trail or raising a glass at home! (Provided you’re at least six feet apart, that is!)
This light and eminently refreshing lager is a pale straw color. A honey-sweet malt backdrop highlights floral scents from the traditional Saaz hops. Virtually no bitterness is wrought from the hops during brewing, but they leave a slightly spicy flavor and a hint of lemon zest. Both the yeast and the hops produce what our team termed a “European finish,” but happily minus the skunkiness we often associate with imported European lagers that don’t weather transport well – Silver Lion is fresh & delicious. The logo pays homage to Bohemia (with its double-tailed silver lion crest), where this style of beer was first brewed.
Don’t let the color fool you, this dark lager is full of surprises. An all German malt bill lends a depth of malt complexity to its body, with a touch of oak smoked wheat bringing each flavor together. A unique mashing technique was used to impart all of the dark color with only a hint of dark malt flavors, leaving this beer incredibly smooth and drinkable. All of this balanced with German Saaz hops, and you can bet the house on this Dark Horse!
Containing the most hops we’ve ever used in a single batch of beer (over 6.5 pounds per barrel!), Hop Voyage lives up to its name. A delicious hop bouquet kicks off this beer with bright aromas of pineapple, tangerine and grapefruit. As you sip, look for more notes of bittering, resinous hops, married with sweetness from the many malts that give this beer its high alcohol content. All of these conclude in a crisp, clean finish for this well-balanced and hoptastic brew.
This refreshing and drinkable hazy IPA starts with big hop aromas right off the bat. As you taste, those hop flavors continue through to the beer’s soft, full body, joined by subtle sweetness to balance the slight hop bitterness. Our head brewer, Tanner, is playing with different hops in search of the ideal hazy IPA, so be on the lookout for all the tweaks and quirks of each new episode of This is the Haze!
As a result of the five months it spent aging in rye whiskey barrels, our barrel-aged Blue Giant Imperial IPA boasts a much sweeter and more mellowed hop profile than it’s original iteration. However, the blending of a few additional hops post-aging has lent a brightness to this beer. The result is a delicious balance of sweet malt flavors, barrel-aged oakiness, hints of dark stone fruit, and light hop brightness to round out this full-bodied brew.
Sweet and tart aromas of maracuyá (passionfruit) pair beautifully with carefully selected hops to produce a warm citrus and tropical fruit nose. First sips will bring a burst of hop bitterness trailed by a bright malt backbone. The finish is clean and balanced. The fantastic sweet-tart flavor of passionfruit complements each facet of this rich, copper-colored IPA.
