Following in the footsteps of “31” Pumpkin Spiced Lager, “62” Imperial Pumpkin Ale pushes the specialty pumpkin beer envelope to its limit. This dark reddish-brown, medium/full-bodied ale is a feast for the senses with warm, vibrant, hop gun-infused flavors and aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove; a hearty malt backbone, balanced by a subdued hop presence and strong 8.2% abv. Pop the top, and go out of your gourd!
Throughout history, brewers have created unique winter/ holiday offerings that may be darker or stronger, spiced or otherwise more aggressively flavored than their staple beers. Known as Winter Warmers, these brews run the gamut from ales to lagers, dark to light, but they are always flavorful and usually slightly higher in alcohol content than their everyday brews. They have no firm stylistic guidelines other than the brewer’s imagination and the traditional variations between their countries of origin; spiced versions are common in America and Belgium, while English and German breweries do not spice their beers.
First brewed in 2011 and released each October, Retribution is full-bodie and jet black with a small tan head and a complex flavor profile of dark chocolate, coffee, smoky malt, and dark fruit, concealing a massive, warming 11.2% abv. After fermentation, Retribution was aged for 6 months inside of bourbon barrels made from charred American White Oak and carefully monitored for 6 months before being bottled in individual runs from each barrel, making the beer from each barrel a unique drinking experience. The resulting Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, infused with aromas and flavors of charred oak, vanilla and caramelized sugar, is a testament to craft brewing, and a physical manifestation of patience justified.
