Absolut Vodka was first launched in New York in 1979. It soon became the talk of the town, in the US and eventually of the world. But the recipe behind the clean and natural taste of Absolut is actually older than 30 years. So is the 18th century medicine bottle found in an antique store in Stockholm, Sweden that gave inspiration to the iconic Absolut Vodka bottle.

Every element used to create Absolut Vodka comes from One Source, within a 75 mile radius of Åhus, Sweden. The water used in Absolut Vodka comes from a deep well in Sweden, where it is protected from impurities. The winter wheat is sewn in the Fall and grows throughout the winter under the Swedish snow, developing into a hard grain. Harvested the following Fall, this distinctive grain helps give Absolut its signature taste. Fresh aroma with a distinct fruitiness of ripened pear and sunny elderflower, followed by soft floral notes all in a balanced harmony.

Absolut Apeach was introduced in 2005. It soon found its following around the world, both in Asia where the peach fruit is originally from, and in Sweden where Absolut is from. (By the way, Absolut also found some devotees in the countries in between).

Absolut Peppar was launched in 1986, seven years after Absolut Vodka. Besides being the first flavored vodka in the family, it was also the first flavored vodka in the world. So why pepper? Since vodka and pepper is the main ingredients in a Bloody Mary, it seemed like a good idea to make things easier for the many Bloody Mary bars popping up in Boston, New York and elsewhere at the time. The idea soon turned out as intended, both for bartenders who could now make Instant Bloody Marys, and for all the fans of the drink.

Absolut Ruby Red is made exclusively from natural ingredients, and unlike some other flavored vodkas, it doesn’t contain any added sugar. Absolut Ruby Red is smooth and fruity with a crisp and refreshing character of zesty grapefruit.

Dr Lakra, alias of Jeronimo Lopez Ramirez, a contemporary artist and tattooist, has collaborated with Absolut to pay homage to Mexican culture and the country’s multicultural heritage. Absolut has a long history of creative collaborations and has previously worked with director Spike Lee to produce Absolut Brooklyn. For this project, Dr Lakra has created three modern bottle designs that “celebrate the spirit of Mexico”, featuring a trio of icons from ancient Mayan culture – Hurakan (hurricane), Kukulkan (serpent) and Balam (jaguar). The labels are a fusion of ancient icons and modern art, brought together to represent contemporary Mexico. The bottles’ colours, in shades of orange, green blue and yellow, were designed as collectors’ art pieces as well as being bottles of Absolut. This mirrors one of the brand’s latest releases for travel retail, Absolut Unique, in which four million bottles were each given a different design. “For Absolut Vodka, no one was a better choice for our collaboration than Dr. Lakra, with his technique of weaving in the design of existing objects, and in this case, an Absolut Vodka bottle,” said Maxime Kouchnir, vice-president, Vodkas, Pernod Ricard US. “Absolut Mexico aims to further inspire cocktail lovers with the Absolut brand, connecting the versatility of our vodka to the vibrant Mexican culture, which this design’s stunning effect does perfectly.”

The story behind the name Absolut Kurant is black currant, a typical Swedish berry from which the flavor is taken. When launched in 1992 it was a tribute to the Swedish origin of Absolut Vodka. Originally it was even supposed to be called Absolut Vinbär since the Swedish word for black currant is vinbär. Only thing was that the English pronunciation would have been wine bar.
