The Crozes-Hermitage appellation was initially limited to the village and surrounding area of Crozes-Hermitage and originally designated thanks to the similarity of some of its wine to the Hermitage wines. This zone was long occupied by orchards and uncultivated land. It wasn’t until the extension of the appellation in 1952 that the vineyards were fully developed. Crozes-Hermitage wines are now well-known on their own merit.
